Charles Mantell
Sir Charles Barrie Knight Mantell, Privy Council of the United Kingdom, PC (30 January 1937 — 1 May 2010) was a British barrister who served as a High Court of Justice, High Court judge and a Lord Justice of Appeal. He is notable for presiding at the trial of Rosemary West. Mantell was born in Romiley, then part of Cheshire, the second son of Francis Christopher Knight Mantell and Elsie, née Caton. His younger brother was actor, Knight Mantell. He attended Manchester Grammar School and studied law at the University of Manchester. He married (Anne) Shirley Cogger in 1960. After National Service as an education officer in the Royal Air Force between 1958 and 1961 (reaching the rank of flying officer), he was call to the bar, called to the bar by Gray's Inn and later served at the chambers of Patrick Russell (judge), Sir Patrick Russell in Manchester. Birmingham Six
The Birmingham Six were six men from Northern Ireland who were each sentenced to life imprisonment in 1975 following their false convictions for the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings. Their convictions were declared unsafe and unsatisfactory and quashed by the Court of Appeal on 14 March 1991. The six men were later awarded financial compensation ranging from £840,000 to £1.2 million. The Court of Appeal (formally "His Majesty's Court of Appeal in England", commonly cited as "CA", "EWCA" or "CoA") is the highest court within the Senior Courts of England and Wales, and second in the legal system of England and Wales only to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
