Charles Hueber
Charles Louis Hueber (21 August 1883 – 18 August 1943) was an Alsatian politician. He was the mayor of Strasbourg between 1929 and 1935, and a member of the French National Assembly twice.Charles, Louis HUEBER (1883 - 1943)' Hueber became involved in political struggles at a young age. In 1900 he founded the Alsatian section of the Metal Workers Trade Union. In 1910 he became the secretary of the Social Democratic Party branch in Alsace-Lorraine. The Eighty (''Les Quatre-Vingts'') were a group of elected French parliamentarians who, on 10 July 1940, voted against the constitutional change that effectively dissolved the Third Republic and established the authoritarian regime of then-Prime Minister Philippe Pétain. Their efforts failed, and Pétain consolidated his regime into the client state of Nazi Germany now known as Vichy France. Some of the Vichy 80, like Léon Blum, would go on to be imprisoned by regime, while others managed to join the French Resistance, through groups like the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans and the Brutus network. Alsatian ( or "Alsatian German"; Lorraine Franconian: ''Elsässerdeitsch''; ; or ) is the group of Alemannic German dialects spoken in most of Alsace, a formerly disputed region in eastern France that has passed between French and German control five times since 1681. Language family Alsatian is closely related to other nearby Alemannic German, Alemannic dialects, such as Swiss German, Swabian German, Swabian, Markgräflerisch, Kaiserstühlerisch and the other Alemannic dialects of Baden. It is often confused with Lorraine Franconian, a more distantly related Franconian languages, Franconian dialect spoken in the northwest corner of Alsace and in neighbouring Lorraine. Alsatian Workers And Peasants Party
The Alsatian Workers and Peasants Party (; ), initially the Opposition Communist Party of Alsace-Lorraine (, abbreviated KPO; ), was a political party in Alsace-Lorraine. The party was led by Jean-Pierre Mourer and Charles Hueber. The party was founded in late October 1929 and was a member of the International Communist Opposition until it was expelled from that organisation in 1934 and gradually moved towards pro-Nazi positions. Split from French Communist Party The party emerged from a split in the Alsatian federation of the French Communist Party (PCF). The ''Volksfront'' ("People's Front") was a political coalition in Alsace, France, that was formed in 1928 by the Popular Republican Union (UPR), a group of communists led by Charles Hueber, Progressives led by Camille Dahlet and the Autonomist Landespartei. 1929 Strasbourg Municipal Election
Elections to the municipal council of Strasbourg were held in France in May 1929 for a six-year term. An autonomist coalition, the ''Volksfront'', defeated an anticlerical and assimilationist coalition of the incumbent socialist mayor, Jacques Peirotes. The ''Volksfront'' won 22 seats in the municipal council, with the French Communist Party winning 11 seats, the '' Autonomist Landespartei'' five seats, the Popular Republican Union four and the Alsatian Progress Party two seats. The 1st constituency of the Bas-Rhin is a French legislative constituency in the Bas-Rhin ''département'', Alsace. Description The constituency includes the centre and immediate northern and southern cantons of Strasbourg. All the cantons were held by parties of the left; three for the PS and one for The Greens.
