Charles Harper (colonial Administrator)
Sir Charles Harper Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, KBE Order of St Michael and St George, CMG (24 February 1876 – 13 May 1950) was a British colonial administrator. Biography He was born in Barnstaple, Devon, England. He was educated at Blundell's School in Tiverton, and Exeter College, Oxford, and played rugby football for Oxford University RFC, Oxford University and England national rugby union team, England. In 1900, Harper entered the Colonial Service as a Cadet in the Gold Coast (British colony), Gold Coast Civil Service and was attached to the Ashanti Field Force. He left the Gold Coast in 1909 when he was called to the Bar of the Inner Temple; the following year he married Marjorie Ford. Harper returned to the Gold Coast and in May 1914 was appointed Acting Colonial Secretary in Accra. Charles Harper (minister)
Charles Harper (1799–1872) was Toodyay's first Anglican minister, and the first ordinand from Western Australia. While being a minister of the church was probably far from his intentions when he set sail for the Swan River Colony in 1837, his family's clerical background and his own disposition suited him well for this vocation. Harper served the Toodyay district for over 30 years, first as registrar of births, deaths and marriages, then from 1849 as an ordained minister. Early life Harper was born on 30 January 1799, and worked as a solicitor in London. In June 1837 he married Julia Gretchen Lukin, the sister of Lionel Lukin, and granddaughter of Lionel Lukin (1742–1834). Young Lukin had returned to England from the Swan River Colony to settle a land dispute in the Murray district. This was successfully resolved with Lukin relocating his land grant to Deepdale, a grant in Toodyay that had originally been allocated to Governor Stirling. Charles Harper (15 July 1842 – 20 April 1912) was a pastoralist, newspaper proprietor and politician in colonial Western Australia. Biography Early life Charles Harper was born on 15 July 1842 at Nardi, near Toodyay in Western Australia. His father was Reverend Charles Harper, a Church of England minister, and his mother, Julia Gretchem Harper ''née'' Lukin. He was educated privately. Pastoral career He took up farming in Beverley, Western Australia. In 1861 and again in 1864, he explored with other pioneers in the Yilgarn district. From 1866, he was heavily involved in the pastoral industry. He was a pastoralist in the north-west of the state until 1868, overlanding to Geraldton in 1867 to secure provisions for Roebourne. From 1868 to 1870, he was involved in the pearling industry. He then briefly farmed at Beverley, before returning to the north west in 1871. Born in London, England, Harper wrote self-illustrated travel books, including those exploring the regions, roads, coastlines, literary connections, and old inns of Britain. In later life, he lived in Petersham. Jack Harper (1900s Pitcher)
Charles William "Jack" Harper (April 2, 1878 – September 30, 1950) was an American pitcher in Major League Baseball. He pitched eight seasons in the majors, from 1899 to 1906. Harper started his professional baseball career in 1898. After a short stint with the Cleveland Spiders, he had a good season with the Fort Wayne Indians of the Interstate League in 1900 (going 20-15). This got him into the majors for good. Over the next few seasons, Harper jumped from league to league, finally settling in with the Cincinnati Reds. He had his best season in 1904, when he went 23–9 with a 2.30 earned run average. Harper's professional baseball career ended in 1906, after pitching only one inning of his first start after being traded to the Cubs.
