Charles Ferdinand Marks
Charles Ferdinand Marks (1852–1941) was a physician and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Politics Charles Marks was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council on 8 November 1888. Although a lifetime appointment, he resigned on 6 January 1892, as he was facing bankruptcy proceedings in relation to the RubyAnna sugar company of which he was a partner. However, he was able to satisfy his creditors and was reappointed to the Council approximately two months later on 11 March 1892. He then remained on the Council until it was abolished on 23 March 1922. Family life In 1879, Charles Marks married widow Elizabeth Gray Dods (née Stodart), making him the step-father of architect Robin Dods and Government Medical Officer Espie Dods and brother-in-law of James Stodart, a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Edward Oswald (Ted) Marks
Edward Oswald Marks (28 October 1882 – 22 September 1971), was an Australian ophthalmologist. He studied first as a geologist, and then began a second career as an ophthalmologist. His work on preventing trachoma in children was significant in reducing eye disease in remote communities. Early life Marks was born at Wickham Terrace, Brisbane, Queensland, the son of Charles and Elizabeth Marks. His mother had three sons from her first marriage to Robert Dods, including Robin Dods and Espie Dods. Charles Marks was a doctor and would later become a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Charles and Elizabeth had four children, including Alexander Marks. Ted Marks attended The Southport School in 1895, aged 13 and Brisbane Grammar School from 1896 to 1900. His family sent him to Ireland to study engineering at Trinity College, Dublin, alongside his brother Alexander Marks (1880-1954), who was studying medicine. ''The Logan Witness'' was a weekly English-language newspaper published in Beenleigh, Queensland, Australia from 9 February 1878 to 10 June 1893. The paper was four pages, double demy (57 cm x 90 cm) in size and issued on a Saturday. History Established by proprietors William Watts and Edward Powell in 1878, ''The Logan Witness'' was the first newspaper to emanate from the Beenleigh district and was originally published as ''The Logan Witness and Southern Districts Advertiser''. Initially optimistic that the rapid advancement of the district entitled it to journalistic representation, the paper struggled financially and was sold to Mr John Hinchcliffe by April 1879. ''The Morning Bulletin'' is an online newspaper servicing the city of Rockhampton and the surrounding areas of Central Queensland, Australia. From 1861 to 2020, ''The Morning Bulletin'' was published as a print edition, before then becoming an exclusively online newspaper. The final print edition was published on 27 June 2020. History The first issue of ''The Bulletin'' was launched on 9 July 1861. It is the second oldest business in Rockhampton, the oldest being the Criterion Hotel which was established in October 1860. The founder and original owner, William Hitchcock Buzacott (1831–1880, brother of Charles Hardie Buzacott), brought the press and equipment from Sydney in 1861 where he operated a small weekly paper. At the time the paper was called the Rockhampton Bulletin and was eagerly read by the town's 698 residents.
