Charles F. Barrett
Charles F. Barrett (January 1, 1861 – February 11, 1946) was an American journalist, soldier, and politician from the U.S. state of Oklahoma who served as the 4th and 6th Adjutant General of Oklahoma between 1919-1923 and 1925–1939. He led National Guard response to the Tulsa race massacre. Early life and career Charles F. Barrett was born on January 1, 1861, in Galion, Ohio, to John E. Barrett and Charlotte Reynolds. He lived in Kansas, Colorado, Utah, and Montana before setting in Oklahoma City on July 4, 1893. He was the managing editor of the ''Press-Gazette'' and founded the ''Earlsboro Border Signal''. Military career Barrett served in the Oklahoma Territory militia as a captain enlisting in 1896 before the Spanish-American War, but did not see combat due to an injury. He continued to serve in the Oklahoma National Guard (or its predecessors) until 1939. The Oklahoma National Guard, a division of the Oklahoma Military Department, is the component of the United States National Guard in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It comprises both Army (OKARNG) and Air (OKANG) National Guard components. The Governor of Oklahoma is Commander-in-Chief of the Oklahoma National Guard when not on federal active duty. Tulsa Race Massacre
The Tulsa race massacre was a two-day-long white supremacist terrorist massacre that took place in the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, between May 31 and June 1, 1921, when mobs of white residents, some of whom had been appointed as deputies and armed by city government officials, attacked black residents and destroyed homes and businesses. The event is considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American history. The attackers burned and destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the neighborhood—at the time, one of the wealthiest black communities in the United States, colloquially known as "Black Wall Street."
