Charles Isaac Elton
Charles Isaac Elton, QC (6 December 1839 – 23 April 1900) was an English lawyer, antiquary, and politician. He is most famous for being one of the authors of the bestselling book '' The Great Book-Collectors''. Biography He was born in Southampton. Educated at Cheltenham and Balliol College, Oxford, he was elected a fellow of Queen's College in 1862. On 6 August 1863 he married Mary Augusta Strachey, a granddaughter of Sir Henry Strachey, 1st Baronet, in Clifton, England. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1865. His remarkable knowledge of old real property law and custom helped him to an extensive conveyancing practice and he took silk in 1885. He sat in the House of Commons for West Somerset in 1884–1885 and for Wellington, Somerset, from 1886 to 1892. In 1869 he succeeded to his uncle's property of Whitestaunton Manor, near Chard, Somerset. Charles Sutherland Elton
Charles Sutherland Elton (29 March 19001 May 1991) was an English zoologist and animal ecologist. He is associated with the development of population and community ecology, including studies of invasive organisms. Personal life Charles Sutherland Elton was born in Manchester, a son of the literary scholar Oliver Elton and the children's writer Letitia Maynard Elton (''née'' MacColl). He had an older brother, Geoffrey Elton, who died at 33, and to whom Charles Elton in many of his writings attributes his interest in scientific natural history. Charles Elton married the English poet Edith Joy Scovell in 1937, a first five-year marriage to Rose Montague having ended in amicable divorce. Charles Elton (police)
Charles E. Elton (1855–1916) was chief of police of the Los Angeles Police Department for four years, four months, and five days, which was a comparatively long stint in the first 50 years of the department. Biography Elton was born in New York in February 1855. Prior to his appointment he had been a civilian with work experience as a railroad man and a real estate agent. One of his major innovations was a Flying Squad of bicycle-mounted officers, which greatly helped the undermanned department cover the already vast distances encompassed by the Los Angeles, city of Los Angeles. A 1904 handbook to Southern California reported, "The salaries of Police Department are as follows, except the Chief, who is a city official: Captains, $150 per month; lieutenants, $125 per month; detectives, $125 per month; sergeants, $115 per month." Charles Abraham Elton
Sir Charles Abraham Elton, 6th Baronet (31 October 1778 – 1 June 1853) was an English officer in the British Army and an author. Life Charles was eldest of three sons of the Rev Sir Abraham Elton, 5th of the Elton baronets, by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Durbin, alderman of Bristol, and was born at Bristol on 31 October 1778. He was educated at Eton, and at the age of fifteen received a commission in the 48th Regiment of Foot, in which he rose to the rank of captain. He served with the 4th Regiment of Foot in the Flanders Campaign under Frederick, Duke of York. He was afterwards lieutenant-colonel of the Somersetshire Militia. On the death of his father (23 February 1842) he became 6th baronet. Elton was friends with Charles Lamb and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was a strong Whig, and spoke at the Westminster hustings on behalf of Samuel Romilly and John Hobhouse; but latterly he lived much in retirement at his house, Clevedon Court. Elton Baronets
The Elton Baronetcy, of Bristol, is a title in the Baronetage of Great Britain. It was created on 31 October 1717 for Abraham Elton, Mayor of and Member of Parliament for Bristol from 1722 to 1727. The second Baronet was also Mayor of Bristol and represented Taunton and Bristol (1727–1742) in the House of Commons. The seventh Baronet sat as Liberal Member of Parliament for Bath. The eighth Baronet was High Sheriff of Somerset in 1895. The tenth Baronet was a pioneer of the British documentary film industry.
