Charles Douglas Eastaughffe
Charles Douglas Eastaughffe was an early Australian settler, later becoming a police trooper and Chief Constable of Dalby, Queensland. Biography Born in Inverness, Scotland, , it is unclear when he first arrived in Australia but it seems to have been about 1835, spending time in Sydney where he married in 1840. There is some evidence that he lived under an alias at this time although the reason is not known. In the early 1850s he moved to northern New South Wales, and served as a police trooper in Wellingrove, near Glen Innes. During this time he was involved in the pursuit of the bushranger Thomas Haywood, requesting the public's help through newspaper appeals to the Morton Bay Courier. In 1854, Charles Eastaughffe moved to the Darling Downs area and brought with him the official documentation proclaiming the town of Dalby on behalf of Captain Samuel Perry, the Deputy Surveyor-General of New South Wales. Bushranger
Bushrangers were armed robbers and outlaws who resided in The bush#Australia, the Australian bush between the 1780s and the early 20th century. The original use of the term dates back to the early years of the British colonisation of Australia, and applied to convicts in Australia, transported convicts who had escaped into the bush to hide from the authorities. By the 1820s, the term had evolved to refer to those who took up "armed robbery, robbery under arms" as a way of life, using the bush as their base. Darling Downs
The Darling Downs is a farming region on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in southern Queensland, Australia. The Downs are to the west of South East Queensland and are one of the major regions of Queensland. The name was generally applied to an area approximating to that of the Condamine River catchment upstream of Condamine, Queensland, Condamine township but is now applied to a wider region comprising the Southern Downs Regional Council, Southern Downs, Western Downs Regional Council, Western Downs, Toowoomba Regional Council, Toowoomba and Goondiwindi Regional Council, Goondiwindi local authority areas. Samuel Augustus Perry (17 March 1787 – 15 January 1854) was an English-born soldier and surveyor. Biography Early life Samuel Augustus Perry was born 17 March 1787 in Wales. He was baptized 12 September 1791 in Holborn, London. He was the son of Jabez Perry, goldbeater, and his wife Ann. Career He was appointed an ensign in the Royal Staff Corps in 1809 and promoted to lieutenant in 1811. In 1819, he was appointed professor of topographical drawing at the Royal Military College, a position he occupied until 1823. He then served in the Peninsular war under Sir George Murray and was present at Badajoz, Nivelle and Nive. Darling Downs Gazette
The ''Darling Downs Gazette'' was a newspaper published from 1848 to 1922 in Drayton and Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia. History ''The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser'' was founded in 1858 by Arthur Sidney Lyon. The first issue of four pages was published on Thursday 10 June 1858 from ''Willow Cottage'', a wooden shanty, in Drayton. After two years, it was purchased by W. H. Byers. Later, William Henry Traill was the proprietor for a brief period. While Drayton, being established in 1842, was the first substantial settlement on the Darling Downs, by the 1860s it was clear that it would be overtaken by nearby Toowoomba in size and importance, leading to Byers relocating the Darling Downs Gazette to Toowoomba in 1861.
