Charles Dickinson (FRS)
Charles Dickinson FRS (6 March 1755 – 5 February 1827) was an English gentleman, magistrate, amateur scientist, and literary dilettante. Life On his election (27 November 1800) as a Fellow of the Royal Society, Charles Dickinson was described as a "gentleman well versed in various branches of natural science, and distinguished for his knowledge in polite literature." At age 20 he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn. In 1782 he made a Grand Tour including Italy, France and Germany. In 1790 he bought an estate at Farley Hill, Berkshire and resided there at the mansion known as Farley Hill Court. He was living in Soho Square in 1800 and had a house in Pimlico at the time of his death. On 7 March 1799 at his residence at 32 Soho Square, Sir Joseph Banks chaired a meeting that formed the Royal Institution of Great Britain by resolution of the subscribers of 50 guineas each. Charles Dickinson (historical Figure)
Charles Dickinson (December 20, 1780 – May 30, 1806) was an American attorney, and a famous duelist. An expert marksman, Dickinson died from injuries sustained in a duel with Andrew Jackson, who later became President of the United States. Dickinson was shot in the chest by the future President, following a garden duel regarding President Jackson's horse, Truxton. The shooting also is said to have stemmed from a drunken insult aimed at Rachel Jackson, future First Lady of the United States. Dickinson was born at Wiltshire Manor in Caroline County, Maryland, the son of Elizabeth Walker and Henry Dickinson, the grandson of Sophia Richardson and Charles Dickinson (1695–1795), and the great-grandson of Rebecca Wynne (daughter of Dr. Thomas Wynne) and John Dickinson. He studied law under U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall, who wrote formal letters of introduction and recommendation for his student. Charles Dickinson (bishop)
Charles John Dickinson (1792–1842) was an Anglican bishop in the Church of Ireland and Privy Councillor. Born in Cork in August 1792, he was the son of Charles Dickinson, a brazier, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he obtained scientific and classical prizes, and was in 1813 elected scholar before being ordained in 1818. At Dublin he was close a friend of Charles Wolfe and Hercules Henry Graves (1794–1817), brother of Robert James Graves. His tutor, Thomas Meredith, "reckoned by many as the best lecturer and tutor of his time in college, was so impressed with the manly talents of his pupil (Dickinson), that he urged him to direct his thoughts to the Bar, as the certain road to speedy and high advancement". Charles Henry Dickinson (1871–1930) was Archdeacon of Bristol from 1921 until 1927. Dickinson educated at Haileybury and Keble College, Oxford. He was ordained deacon in 1895 and priest in 1896.
