Charlene Strong
Charlene D. Strong (born May 6, 1963) is an American civil rights advocate and a former member of the Washington State Human Rights Commission. Biography Strong began her advocacy career in 2006. In December of that year, Strong's partner of nine years, Kate Fleming, died suddenly when a flash flood trapped her inside the flooded basement of her Madison Valley, Seattle, recording studio during the Hanukkah Eve Wind Storm. Arriving at the hospital, Strong was initially prevented from joining Fleming, despite their long partnership, because Washington State did not recognize domestic partners. In January 2007, she testified before the Washington State Senate Committee in support of a bill creating a statewide Domestic Partnership Registry. Equal Rights Washington (ERW) is Washington’s largest statewide LGBTQ advocacy and community outreach organization. The National LGBTQ Task Force (formerly National Gay Task Force; National Gay and Lesbian Task Force) is an American social justice advocacy non-profit organizing the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Also known as The Task Force, the organization supports action and activism on behalf of LGBTQ people and advances a progressive vision of liberation. The past executive director was Rea Carey from 2008-2021 and the current executive director is Kierra Johnson, who took over the position in 2021 to become the first Black woman to head the organization. The Task Force organizes the annual Creating Change conference, a skills-building event for community and allies with over 2,000 attendees each year. Seattle Queer Film Festival (formerly known as the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival) is an annual film festival in Seattle. The 28th Annual Seattle Queer Film Festival will take place October 12-22, 2023.
