The Gamma Ethniki (, C National Division) is the Greek football league system, third highest football league in Greece. History The Gamma Ethniki began in 1965 as an amateur championship, while in 1983 it was changed to professional. Although not literally national (it is divided into ''North'' and ''South'' groups), Football League 2 is considered as a national division. On 3 August 2010, it was announced that the division had been renamed ''Football League 2''. From season 2013–14, the football League 2 was merged with the Delta Ethniki, fourth division championship (Delta Ethniki) and renamed Gamma Ethniki once more. Ilioupoli (, " Sun City") is a suburban municipality and a town in Central Athens regional unit and located in the central-southern part of the Athens agglomeration. Its name is the modern form of the ancient name of Heliopolis in Egypt. Development of Ilioupoli started around 1924, when Greek refugees from Asia Minor settled there. Geography Ilioupoli is southeast of Athens city centre. The municipality has an area of 12.724 km2. It lies at the western foot of the forested Hymettus mountain, which covers the eastern half of the municipality. Delta Ethniki () was the fourth level of Greek football championship. During the period of its existence, it was the lowest national division of the Greek championship. It was founded in the 1982–83 season and abolished in the 2012–13 season, as it was merged with the third division (Football League 2). Its history therefore spans 31 years. Many historical clubs of first division (Super League) have played in Delta Ethniki, such as Iraklis (2011–12 season), Ethnikos Piraeus, Apollon Smyrnis and Atromitos.
