Chapman Point
Chapman Point () is a low rounded headland marking the eastern limit of Scar Inlet on the north side of Jason Peninsula, Graham Land. Scar Inlet
The calving front at the Scar Inlet The Scar Inlet is an area of the Larsen Ice Shelf immediately northwest of Jason Peninsula, named after the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. It is bounded by Tashtego Point and Chapman Point. History The region was discovered in 1902 by Otto Nordenskjold, leader of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition, 1901–04, who gave the name "Scott Bay". The name did not survived in usage, perhaps due to the large number of features already named after Captain Robert F. Scott. Jason Peninsula
Jason Peninsula () is a large peninsula on the east coast of Graham Land comprising several mainly snow-covered summits. It rises above the Larsen Ice Shelf and extends from the narrow neck of land east of Medea Dome for , terminating in Cape Framnes. This feature was first seen from seaward on December 1, 1893, by Carl Anton Larsen, who named one of the high peaks "Mount Jason" after his ship, the ''Jason''. Larsen was too distant to map the area in detail, but in 1902 the Swedish Antarctic Expedition under Otto Nordenskiöld observed the area from Borchgrevink Nunatak and reported the peaks seen by Larsen to be separated from the mainland. The name "Jason Island" was subsequently used for Larsen's discovery, but in 1955 the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey determined this feature to be a large peninsula. Graham Land
Graham Land is the portion of the Antarctic Peninsula that lies north of a line joining Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz. This description of Graham Land is consistent with the 1964 agreement between the British Antarctic Place-names Committee and the US Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names, in which the name "Antarctic Peninsula" was approved for the major peninsula of Antarctica, and the names Graham Land and Palmer Land for the northern and southern portions, respectively. The line dividing them is roughly 69 degrees south. Graham Land is named after Sir James R. G. Graham, First Lord of the Admiralty at the time of John Biscoe's exploration of the west side of Graham Land in 1832. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is the United Kingdom's national polar research institute. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (or UK-APC) is a United Kingdom government committee, part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, responsible for recommending names of geographical locations within the British Antarctic Territory (BAT) and the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). Such names are formally approved by the Commissioners of the BAT and SGSSI respectively, and published in the BAT Gazetteer and the SGSSI Gazetteer maintained by the Committee. Sydney Chapman (mathematician)
Sydney Chapman (29 January 1888 – 16 June 1970) was a British mathematician and geophysicist. His work on the kinetic theory of gases, solar-terrestrial physics, and the Earth's ozone layer has inspired a broad range of research over many decades. Education and early life Chapman was born in Eccles, near Salford in England and began his advanced studies at a technical institute, now the University of Salford, in 1902. In 1904 at age 16, Chapman entered the University of Manchester. He competed for a scholarship to the university offered by his home county, and was the last student selected. Chapman later reflected, "I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I'd hit one place lower." He initially studied engineering in the department headed by Osborne Reynolds. The International Geophysical Year (IGY; french: Année géophysique internationale) was an international scientific project that lasted from 1 July 1957 to 31 December 1958. It marked the end of a long period during the Cold War when scientific interchange between East and West had been seriously interrupted. Sixty-seven countries participated in IGY projects, although one notable exception was the mainland People's Republic of China, which was protesting against the participation of the Republic of China ( Taiwan).
