Over The Rhine (band)
Over the Rhine is an American, Ohio-based folk music band that was formed in 1989 by Linford Detweiler, Karin Bergquist, Ric Hordinski, and Brian Kelley. Over the years, they have toured and recorded in many variations. Over the Rhine is now primarily Bergquist (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano) and Detweiler (keyboards, electric bass, vocals) accompanied by complementary musicians on albums and tours. Over the course of the band's existence, they have recorded at least 15 studio albums and have shared the stage with Bob Dylan, John Prine, Adrian Belew, Squeeze, Ani DiFranco, My Morning Jacket, Hem, and Cowboy Junkies. "Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers, from his 1971 debut album '' Just As I Am,'' produced by Booker T. Jones. The record featured musicians Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass guitar, Al Jackson Jr. on drums and Stephen Stills on guitar. String arrangements were arranged by Jones. The song was recorded in Los Angeles, with overdubs in Memphis by engineer Terry Manning. The song was released as a single in 1971, becoming a breakthrough hit for Withers, reaching number six on the U.S. R&B Chart and number three on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart. William Harrison Withers Jr. (July 4, 1938 – March 30, 2020) was an American singer and songwriter. He is known for having several hits over a career spanning 18 years, including "Ain't No Sunshine" (1971), "Grandma's Hands" (1971), "Use Me (Bill Withers song), Use Me" (1972), "Lean on Me (song), Lean on Me" (1972), "Lovely Day" (1977) and "Just the Two of Us (Grover Washington Jr. song), Just the Two of Us" (1980) (recorded in collaboration with Grover Washington Jr.). Over-the-Rhine, often abbreviated as OTR, is a residential neighborhood located in the urban basin of Cincinnati, Ohio. Over-the-Rhine is among the largest, most intact urban historic districts in the United States. Originally settled by Ohio Rhinelanders (), the neighborhood became home to significant African-American and Appalachian populations during the mid-20th century. It is home to several of Cincinnati's most famous landmarks, including Music Hall and Findlay Market. Etymology The neighborhood's name comes from Rhinelanders who settled the area in the mid-19th century. Many walked to work across bridges over the Miami and Erie Canal, which separated the area from downtown Cincinnati.
