Peter Chanel
Peter Chanel (12 July 1803 – 28 April 1841), born Pierre Louis Marie Chanel, was a Catholic priest, missionary, and martyr. Chanel was a member of the Society of Mary or "Marists" and was sent as a missionary to Oceania. He arrived on the island of Futuna in November 1837. Chanel was clubbed to death in April 1841 at the instigation of a chief upset because his son converted. Life Early years Chanel was born in the hamlet of La Potière near Montrevel-en-Bresse, Ain département, France. Son of Claude-François Chanel and Marie-Anne Sibellas he was the fifth of eight children. From about the age of 7 to 12 he worked as a shepherd. The local parish priest persuaded his parents to allow Peter to attend a small school the priest had started. After some local schooling, his piety and intelligence attracted the attention of a visiting priest from Cras, the abbé Trompier, who took over the boy's education at Cras in the autumn of 1814. Chanel College is a Catholic co-educational Secondary College in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. Founded in 1966 by the Sisters of Mercy, the school was originally located at Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, but moved to 11 Paterson Street as Stella Maris College. The girls were educated at Stella Maris College and the boys at Chanel College, commenced by the Marist Brothers in 1968. Sister Bernadette continued to head Stella Maris and was resident principal of the girls' school, while Brother Austin Tanzer was the principal of Chanel. It was not until a later date, around 1976, that Stella Maris/Chanel College became a fully co-educational school with Brother John as Principal. At this time, it only educated students to Year 10; the year of completion of the Junior Certificate. Students then went on to attend the Gladstone State High School to complete Senior studies. Chanel College () is a Catholic boys' secondary school in Coolock, Dublin, Ireland. The Principal is Dara Gill. The college has approximately 600 pupils. History The school opened in 1955 with 12 pupils in the first year. It was the year after the canonisation of Saint Peter Chanel (one of the early Marists and the first to be canonised) and so the college was named in his honour. The main part of the school was built in the late sixties. Chanel was the third school to be opened by the Marist Fathers in Ireland, coming after CUS in 1867, and St Mary's College, Dundalk in 1861. Chanel College (Geelong)
Chanel College was a Roman Catholic school for boys in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Founded in 1958, it closed in 1999. The site was later purchased by the Geelong Baptist College. History The school was founded in 1958 by the Marist Fathers, and established on the site of what is now Pettitt Park, in the Geelong suburb of Bell Post Hill. The school's founding rector was Father Stanley Hosie SM, MA, STL. Originally a school for day boys, from the start of 1962 the school took in boarders from Australia and Malaysia (notably Robert Tan and Matthew Chee). Whilst day students were still enrolled, the focus of the school was on boarding students. In mid 1963, the school relocated to a newly built complex at Lovely Banks, near Geelong, under the guidance and direction of the schools' second rector, Stephen Maloney SM, BA, MACE. Chanel College, Masterton
Chanel College, Masterton is a Catholic secondary school situated in Masterton, New Zealand. The school is named after St Peter Chanel, who was a French Marist priest killed on the Pacific island of Futuna in 1841. The school was established in 1978. It resulted from the amalgamation of two schools, St Joseph's College for Boys (founded in 1945) operated by the Marist Brothers and St Bride's College for Girls which had been established in 1898 by the Brigidine Sisters. The College, which is located on the old St Joseph's College site, became an Integrated School in November 1981. History Founded in 1962 by the Marist Fathers, it was originally a boys-only boarding school (with special permission for non-boarders) that later became co-educational.
