Chandeliers (band)
Chandeliers are an electronic ensemble from Chicago, IL. The group was formed in 2005 by Chris Kalis, Dan Jugle, Scott McGaughey, and Travis Murphy and is based out of the Shape Shoppe recording studio/loft in Chicago. The group's recordings and live performances cover an array of different musical styles and their sound has been likened to musicians such as Kraftwerk, Can, Chris Carter, Giorgio Moroder. Chandeliers have released four albums: ''The Thrush'' (2008), ''Dirty Moves'' (2009), ''Roulé'' (2011), and ''Founding Fathers'' (2012). The group has toured nationally and has performed live musical scores to Wallace Berman's ''Aleph'', Emlen Etting's ''Oramunde'', The Junky's Christmas animated short, and Marcell Jankovics' Son of the White Mare. The ''Chicago Reader'', or ''Reader'' (stylized as ЯEADER), is an American alternative weekly newspaper in Chicago, Illinois, noted for its literary style of journalism and coverage of the arts, particularly film and theater. Daytrotter
Daytrotter is a recording studio, music venue and subscription-based music discovery website located in Atlanta, United States. It hosts recording sessions with indie rock, indie music acts. The original studio in Rock Island, Illinois, was founded in 2006 by Sean Moeller. It later moved to Davenport, Iowa and in 2019 moved to Atlanta, Georgia. The sessions can be compared to that of a radio station's lounge recordings, where musicians passing through the town can record live in the studio. Given their tendency to offer an eclectic sampling of music as well as their production style the sessions have been compared to that of the John Peel#Peel sessions, Peel Sessions. Sinkane
Sinkane (born Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab in London, England) is a Sudanese-American musician who blends krautrock, prog rock, electronica, free jazz and funk rock with Sudanese pop. He is signed to City Slang Records. Born to college professors in London, he lived in Sudan, then moved to the US when he was five, and lived for some time in Ohio. Prior to embarking on his solo career, he worked with Eleanor Friedberger, Caribou, of Montreal, Born Ruffians, and Yeasayer as a session musician. Mahjongg (band)
''Mahjongg'' was a band based in Columbia, Missouri and Chicago, Illinois. Formed by multi-instrumentalist Hunter Husar and guitarist Jeff Carrillo in 2001, their sound combined guitar, synthesizer and computer manipulations with dense rhythmic textures derived from Afrobeat, funk, and post-punk. Mahjongg released three full-length albums: ''Raydoncong'' (2005), ''Kontpab'' (2008) and ''The Long Shadow of the Paper Tiger'' (2010). They performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival and the Off Festival in Mysłowice, Poland. In December 2010 they played the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival curated by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. ''Son of the White Mare'' () is a 1981 Hungarian animated fantasy adventure film directed by Marcell Jankovics. The story's main character is Fehérlófia (Son of the White Mare), who has superhuman powers. It is based on the narrative poetry, under the same title, from László Arany and ancient Hunnic, Avaric and Hungarian legends; as a tribute to ancient steppe peoples. Plot Fanyüvő (Treeshaker) is born as the third son of a horse, and he gains his power by suckling the horse's milk. He listens to old tales, mostly about the Forefather and the end of his reign, caused by evil humanoid dragons freed by the three wives of the three sons of the Forefather. Marcell Jankovics
Marcell Jankovics (21 October 1941 – 29 May 2021) was a Hungarian graphic artist, film director, animator and author. He is best known for the animated films ''Johnny Corncob'' (1973; the first animated feature of his native country) and ''Son of the White Mare'' (1981; cited as one of the best animated films ever made). Life and career Jankovics was born on 21 October 1941 in Budapest, Hungary. From 1955 he attended the Pannonhalma Benedictine Secondary School. He started working at Pannónia in 1960. His fourth feature film '' The Tragedy of Man'' was in production from 1988 until its release in 2011. He died on 29 May 2021. "The Junky's Christmas" is a short story by William S. Burroughs. It originally appears in the 1989 collection '' Interzone'' and on the 1993 album ''Spare Ass Annie and Other Tales''. It was later adapted into short claymation film and a spoken word version was performed through a collaboration between William S. Burroughs and Kurt Cobain. Plot On Christmas Day, penniless and withdrawing from opiates, Danny emerges from a 72-hour stay in a police holding cell. Hoping to make enough money to buy his next hit of heroin, he scours the streets looking for something to steal. After an unsuccessful attempt to break into a parked car, he discovers an unattended suitcase sitting in a doorway. Emlen Etting
Emlen Pope Etting Jr. (August 24, 1905 – July 20, 1993) was an American painter, sculptor, filmmaker, and member of Philadelphia's elite Main Line Society. Early life and education He attended schools in Lausanne, Switzerland, and St. George's School in Middletown, Rhode Island. After graduating from Harvard in 1928, he studied with the artist Andre Lhote in Paris. During World War II, Etting served in the psychological warfare division of the Office of War Information. He was present at the liberation of Paris and he collaborated with Orson Welles to record the event. Family Emlen Pope Etting Jr. was born to Florence Lucas Etting and Emlen Pope Etting Sr., a failed stockbroker, in 1905. Wallace Berman
Wallace "Wally" Berman (February 18, 1926 – February 18, 1976) was an American experimental filmmaker, Assemblage (art), assemblage, and collage artist and a crucial figure in the history of post-war California art. Personal life and education Wallace Berman was born in Staten Island, New York in 1926. In the 1930s his family moved to Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Berman was discharged from high school for gambling in the early 1940s and became involved in the West Coast jazz scene. Berman wrote a song with Jimmy Witherspoon. He attended classes at Jepson Art Institute and Chouinard Art Institute in the 1940s. For a few years from 1949 he worked in a factory finishing furniture. Giorgio Moroder
Giovanni Giorgio Moroder (, ; born 26 April 1940) is an Italian composer, songwriter, and record producer. Dubbed the " Father of Disco", Moroder is credited with pioneering euro disco and electronic dance music. His work with synthesizers had a large influence on several music genres such as Hi-NRG, Italo disco, new wave, house and techno music. When in Munich in the 1970s, Moroder started his own record label called Oasis Records, which several years later became a subdivision of Casablanca Records. He is the founder of the former Musicland Studios in Munich, a recording studio used by many artists including the Rolling Stones, Electric Light Orchestra, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen and Elton John.
