The Champagne Stakes is an Australian Turf Club Group One, Group 1 Horse racing, horse race for two-year-old Thoroughbreds at set weights run at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, Australia over a distance of 1,600 metres during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Prize money is A$1,000,000. History The inaugural running of the race was on the second day of the Australian Jockey Club Autumn Meet in 1861 as the fourth race on the six race card. The winner was Exeter trained by the famous trainer of the time Etienne L. de Mestre, Etienne de Mestre. The race became the premier AJC sprint race for two-year-olds for nearly 80 years. With the introduction of the richer Golden Slipper Stakes in 1957, the AJC decided on extending the distance of the race to 1 mile (1972) and as such creating a natural progression for elite two year old races that is now known as the Juvenile Triple Crown – Golden Slipper Stakes, Sires Produce Stakes (ATC) and Champagne Stakes. The Inglis Sires', registered as the Sires Produce Stakes, is an Australian Turf Club Group One, Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-olds at Set Weights run over a distance of 1,400 metres at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, Australia in April during the Australian Turf Club, ATC Championships Carnival. The prize money is $1,000,000. History The race was first run over one mile in 1867 and won by Glencoe. The race between 1905 and 1908 was run over 6 furlongs. Red Anchor was a New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who raced in Australia. In the 1984 Spring Racing Carnival he won the Caulfield Guineas, W. S. Cox Plate and the Victoria Derby. In 2021 he was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Pierro (foaled 5 October 2009) is a retired Australian thoroughbred racehorse who is now standing at stud. A bay horse, he stands at 16.1hh. He was from the fifth crop of the champion racehorse and stallion Lonhro out of the dam Miss Rite Note (IRE)(by Daylami). Pierro had a short racing career, racing in just two seasons and retiring to stud as a three-year-old. He ran in a total of 14 races, with 11 wins and 3 placings, including 5 Group 1 wins. King's Legacy
King's Legacy (foaled 1 September 2017) is a multiple Group 1 winning Australian thoroughbred racehorse. Background King's Legacy was the third highest priced lot sold at the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. He was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $1.4 million. Racing career 2019/20: two-year-old season King's Legacy began his racing career in a mid-week maiden at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse finishing in third placing. The colt then started at the odds of 5/1 in the B J McLachlan Plate at Eagle Farm Racecourse. Under the guidance of jockey Kerrin McEvoy the horse won by a margin of half a length. As a result of this win, King's Legacy gained a start in the Magic Millions Classic for two-year-olds a fortnight later. He finished in 5th placing.
