Chams
The Chams ( Cham: , چام, ''cam''), or Champa people ( Cham: , اوراڠ چمڤا, ''Urang Campa''; or ; , ), are an Austronesian ethnic group in Southeast Asia and are the original inhabitants of central Vietnam and coastal Cambodia before the arrival of the Cambodians and Vietnamese, during the expansion of the Khmer Empire (802–1431) and the Vietnamese conquest of Champa (11th–19th century). From the 2nd century, the Chams founded Champa, a collection of independent Hindu-Buddhist principalities in what is now central and southern Vietnam. By the 17th century, Champa became an Islamic sultanate. Today, the Cham people are largely Muslim, with a minority following Hinduism, both formed the indigenous Muslim and Hindu population in both Cambodia and Vietnam. Despite their adherence to Islam, the Cham people still retain their ancestral practice of matriarchy in family and inheritance. Ebony Cham (born October 15, 2004), commonly referred to as Ebony, is a French singer. In 2025, she was a finalist in the musical program Star Academy 12, broadcast on TF1. Early life With parents from Guadeloupe and Martinique, Ebony Cham was born on October 15, 2004. Her father is , a famous zouk singer from the 2000s. She began playing guitar and piano at an early age, and took music theory lessons. Before joining Star Academy, Ebony was studying musicology and preparing to join a jazz school. CHAM (820 Hertz, kHz) is an AM radio, AM radio station in Hamilton, Ontario. It is owned by Neeti Prakash Ray and is part of the CINA Media Group. The station is branded Big AM 820 CINA Radio Punjabi and plays contemporary South Asian music. CHAM's 6-tower array is located near Binbrook, Ontario, Binbrook. History CHAM began operations in November 1959 as a 5,000-watt station on 1280 kHz with the CHIQ call sign. Initially the station broadcast a classical music format but rock and roll was featured later in the 1960s, with Canadian radio personality David Marsden among the station's DJ roster.
