Chae Byong-duk
Chae Byong-duk (; 17 April 1916 – 27 July 1950) was a South Korean army general. Early life On 17 April 1916, he was born in Heian'nan-dō, Korea, Empire of Japan (now South Pyongan Province, North Korea). In 1933, he entered the Imperial Japanese Army Academy. Military career During World War II, he served as an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army. After the liberation of Korea, he joined the Republic of Korea Army. In April 1950, he started a second term as a Chief of Staff (Rank: Major general). Following the outbreak of the Korean War, the Republic of Korea Army collapsed rapidly. On 30 June 1950, Chae Byong-duk was dismissed and he transferred to South Gyeongsang Province Defence Command. On 27 July, he was killed in action in the Battle of Hadong. He was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant General after his death by the South Korean government. Heian'nan-dō
, alternatively Heian'nan Province or South Heian Province, was a province of Korea under Japanese rule. Its capital was at Pyongyang, Heijō. Killed In Action
Killed in action (KIA) is a casualty classification generally used by militaries to describe the deaths of their personnel at the hands of enemy or hostile forces at the moment of action. The United States Department of Defense, for example, says that those declared KIA did not need to have fired their weapons, but only to have been killed due to hostile attack. KIAs include those killed by friendly fire during combat, but not from incidents such as accidental vehicle crashes, murder, or other non-hostile events or terrorism. KIA can be applied both to front-line combat troops and naval, air, and support forces. Furthermore, the term died of wounds (DOW) is used to denote personnel who reached a medical treatment facility before dying. Hadong County () is a county in South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It is located on the far-west side of the province, bordering South Jeolla Province.
