Chacachacare
Chacachacare is an island in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, located at 10° 41' north latitude and 61° 45' west longitude. The island is in area. It is one of the Bocas Islands, which lie in the ''Bocas del Dragón'' (''Dragons' Mouth'') between Trinidad and Venezuela. Chacachacare is the westernmost of the Bocas Islands which belong to Trinidad and Tobago. Patos Island, which lies further west, was part of Trinidad and Tobago until 1942, when it was ceded to Venezuela in exchange for Soldado Rock. History The island was spotted by Christopher Columbus on his third New World voyage on 12 August 1498, and his little fleet spent the night anchored in Monkey Harbour. Concepción Mariño
Concepción Mariño Carige Fitzgerald (1790 – 1854) was a woman involved in the Venezuelan War of Independence. Biography Born on 1790, in El Valle del Espíritu Santo, Mariño was raised in a wealthy family. She was the daughter of Santiago Mariño de Acuña, a Spaniard who had established himself in Venezuela and an Irish woman, Atanasia Carige Fitzgerald; she was the sister of Santiago Mariño. Her parents owned estates on the island of Trinidad and eastern Venezuela, including one on the islet of Chacachacare and another in Delta Amacuro. She married Jose Maria Sanda; they had five children. After marriage, she inherited the estate of Chacachacare and accumulated substantial assets in land and property. After the capitulation of the First Republic in mid-1812, Mariño's ranch in Chacachacare became the meeting place for Republicans. Trinidad And Tobago Dry Forests
Trinidad and Tobago dry forests are tropical dry forests located primarily in western and southern parts of the island of Trinidad, in southern parts of the island of Tobago and on smaller offshore islands including Chacachacare, Monos, Huevos, Gaspar Grande, Little Tobago and Saint Giles Island. Tropical dry forests in Trinidad and Tobago include both deciduous and semi-evergreen forests. A recent work by Howard Nelson suggests that areas which were formerly classified as evergreen forest also fit the criteria for dry forests. The major areas of dry forest in Trinidad include the Chaguaramas peninsula in the northwest, areas along the south coast of the island, from Cedros to Morne Diablo, and areas along the east coast including parts of the Guayaguayare, Mayaro and Manzanilla coastline. A leper colony, also known by many other names, is an isolated community for the quarantining and treatment of lepers, people suffering from leprosy. '' M. leprae'', the bacterium responsible for leprosy, is believed to have spread from East Africa through the Near East, Europe, and Asia by the 5th century before reaching the rest of the world more recently. Historically, leprosy was believed to be extremely contagious and divinely ordained, leading to enormous stigma against its sufferers. The Bocas del Dragón (Dragon's Mouths) are the series of straits separating the Gulf of Paria from the Caribbean Sea. Santiago Mariño
Santiago Mariño Carige Fitzgerald (25 July 1788 in Valle Espíritu Santo, Margarita – 4 September 1854 in La Victoria, Aragua), was a nineteenth-century Venezuelan revolutionary leader and hero in the Venezuelan War of Independence (1811–1823). He became an important leader of eastern Venezuela and for a short while in 1835 seized power over the new state of Venezuela.
