Ceutorhynchus Americanus
''Ceutorhynchus americanus'' is a species of true weevils in the tribe Ceutorhynchini. It is found in Alaska, United States, as well as Ontario, Canada. It feeds on the stems of ''Raphanus raphanistrum''. Feeding habits and host plants Seeing as Raphanus species are not native in the same distribution as the listed C. americanus' native distribution one can assume this species' main host plant isn't Raphanus sp. but merely able to generally browse on Raphanus sp. It has also been observed by Citizen science, amateur observers on Alliaria petiolata, garlic mustard, Erythronium, fawn lily, and Daylily, day lily. More studies are needed to learn the feeding habits of this species. Though species in this Ceutorhynchus, genus have been looked at as a Biological pest control, biological control against Garlic mustard in the past. Ernst Friedrich Germar
Ernst Friedrich Germar (3 November 1786 – 8 July 1853) was a German professor and director of the Mineralogy, Mineralogical Museum at Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Halle. As well as being a mineralogist he was interested in entomology and particularly in the Coleoptera and Hemiptera. He wrote monographs on several insect families including the Scutelleridae. He also took an interest in paleoentomology. Life and work Germar was born in Glauchau in the Electorate of Saxony where his father was a merchant. His two older and a younger brother went to study trade but Ernst went to a grammar school in Meiningen at the age of twelve under the care of Schaubach, a relative of his father. He became interested in insects thanks to a friend who had attended forestry classes at Dreissigacker under Johann Matthäus Bechstein. He also got to know the entomologist Joseph Philippe de Clairville who lived in Meiningen. In 1804 he went to study at the mining academy (Bergakademie) at Freiburg where he ... Baltic Amber
Baltic amber or succinite is amber from the Baltic region, home of its largest known deposits. It was produced sometime during the Eocene epoch, but exactly when is controversial. It has been estimated that this forested region provided the resin for more than 100,000 tons of amber. Today, more than 90% of the world's amber comes from Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. It is a major source of income for the region; the local Kaliningrad Amber Combine extracted 250 tonnes of it in 2014 and 400 tonnes in 2015. Baltic amber is also found in Poland, as well as the Baltic states. Bitterfeld amber from the brown coal mines near Bitterfeld in Germany was previously thought to be redeposited Baltic amber, but is now known to be chemically distinct, though like with Ukrainian Rovno amber, it is thought to have been deposited around the same time as Baltic amber. Because Baltic amber contains from 3 to 8% succinic acid, it is also termed succinite. Geologic context ''In situ'' Balt ... Baridinae Genera
Baridinae is a subfamily of true weevils (Curculionidae). It was established by Carl Johan Schönherr in 1836. Some 4,300 species in 550 genera are placed here, most of which occur in the New World. A few are economically significant pest (organism), pests, while others are in turn used for biocontrol of invasive plant pests. This subfamily also contains a few endangered species. Description and ecology Baridinae are typically small to mid-sized short-legged weevils, with a characteristic round or ball-like shape. Usually colored black all over at least on the upperside, they are neither highly glossy or metallic, nor dull, but moderately shiny, like shoe polish, polished leather. Some have small dots or bands of lighter scales that can be rubbed off, in particular on the elytrae; yet again others are dusted with an irregular sprinkling of such scales. The elytrae are often decorated with neat lengthwise rows of small pits. The pronotum is not highly arched and may be outright ... Curculionidae
The Curculionidae are a family of weevils, commonly called snout beetles or true weevils. They are one of the largest animal families with 6,800 genera and 83,000 species described worldwide. They are the sister group to the family Brentidae. They include the bark beetles as the subfamily Scolytinae, which are modified in shape in accordance with their wood-boring lifestyle. They do not much resemble other weevils, so they were traditionally considered a distinct family, Scolytidae. The family also includes the ambrosia beetles, of which the present-day subfamily Platypodinae was formerly considered the distinct family Platypodidae. Description Adult Curculionidae can be recognised by the well-developed, downwards-curved snout (Rostrum (anatomy), rostrum) possessed by many species, though the rostrum is sometimes short (e.g. Entiminae). They have elbowed Antenna (biology), antennae that end in clubs, and the first antennal segment often fits into a groove in the side of the rost ...
