Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises
Ceres Hellenic Enterprises is a large traditional Greek ship management company based in London. It was founded by George Livanos in 1949, but family shipping interests in fact date back to 1824. It is currently run by Peter G. Livanos. The Livanos family's maritime legacy dates back to 1824, and Ceres continues to be family-controlled. It owns, operates, buys and sells bulk carriers, container ships and tankers. In 2000 its division Seachem Tankers Ltd. merged with the Norwegian-based Odfjell to create the Odfjell Seachem AS shipping company, one of the world's largest chemical tanker operators. In 2001, the company entered into a joint venture with Italian shipping company Coeclerici, forming Coeclerici Ceres Bulk Carriers N.V. George Livanos
George P. Peter Livanos
Peter G. Livanos (born 1958), is a Greek shipping tycoon. He owns the Greek shipping company Ceres Hellenic, and was involved in the restructuring of the shipping company into the group Ceres Hellenic. Livanos lives with his family at Lake Geneva, Athens and London. He controls 100% of Ceres Hellenic Shipping, the largest Greek fleet, in terms of tonnage, and a smaller ferry line of Russian-made hydrofoils that serve the Greek Islands. Capesize ships are the largest dry cargo ships with ball mark dimension: about 170,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) capacity, long, beam (wide), draught (under water depth). They are too large to transit the Suez Canal ( Suezmax limits) or Panama Canal ( Neopanamax limits), and so have to pass either Cape Agulhas or Cape Horn to traverse between oceans.
