Cerberus-class Diving Support Vessel
The ''Cerberus'' class are four diving support vessels in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy. Built by Scheepswerf Visser at Den Helder, their mission is to help the :nl:Explosieven Opruimingsdienst Defensie, explosive ordnance disposal unit with bomb disposal and to serve as a platform to train new military diving, navy divers. Ships in class Construction and career Two of the ships have undergone modifications since being commissioned. In 1997 ''Hydra'' received a extension in the mid-section and a new bow thruster among other things. The lengthening gave here a new displacement of 340 t. ''Nautilus'' followed with the same modifications in 2008. As a result, these two ships can carry an additional 2 crew and 22 passengers. Den Helder
Den Helder () is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Den Helder occupies the northernmost point of the North Holland peninsula. It is home to the country's main naval base. From here the Royal TESO ferryboat service operates the transportation link between Den Helder and the nearby Dutch Wadden island of Texel to the north. Etymology Before the year 1928 the official name of Den Helder was Helder. The origin of the name Helder is not entirely clear. The name Helder may have come from ''Helle/Helde'', which means "hill" or "hilly grounds", or from ''Helre'', which means a sandy ridge. Another explanation is that the name derived from ''Helsdeur'' (Hell's Door), likely because in the water between Den Helder and Texel (called Marsdiep) the current was so strong that many ships were lost. Auxiliary Ship Replacement Program
The Auxiliary ship replacement program is set to replace ten auxiliary ships of the Royal Netherlands Navy from various classes by eight new ships which will be built by a Dutch shipyard. History In 2020 the A-letter was sent by the Dutch Defence Materiel Administration, Dutch Defence Materiel Administration (DMO) to the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives outlining the plans for the new ships. The program will consists of two variants, a coastal variant and an ocean going one. The first ship was supposed to enter service in 2024. But due to delays in the decision making this was pushed back. The B-letter followed in June 2022 specifying further details. For example that the ships need to be carbon neutral and that they need to be able to use Methanol fuel, methanol capable diesel engines. Bow Thruster
Manoeuvering thruster (bow thruster or stern thruster) is a transversal propulsion device built into, or mounted to, either the bow or stern, of a ship or boat to make it more manoeuvrable. Bow thrusters make docking easier, since they allow the captain to turn the vessel to port or starboard side, without using the main propulsion mechanism which requires some forward motion for turning; The effectiveness of a thruster is curtailed by any forward motion due to the Coandă effect. The Royal Netherlands Navy ( nl, Koninklijke Marine, links=no) is the naval force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
