Centre For Independent Living In Toronto
The Centre for Independent Living in Toronto (CILT) is a not for profit organization that supports people with disabilities and addictions. In 1993, CILT advocated to the Government of Ontario for financial support. The aim was to provide support to people with disabilities to pay for their own home care. By 2012, their advocacy succeeded and they were given responsibility for administering such a system. In the early 21st century CILT advocated against ableism and for better support for people with disabilities and improved access to COVID-19 vaccines. History and activities CILT was founded in 1984. Homecare (also spelled as home care) is health care or supportive care provided by a professional caregiver in the individual home where the patient or client is living, as opposed to care provided in group accommodations like clinics or nursing home. Homecare is also known as domiciliary care, social care or in-home care. Ing Min Wong-Ward (June 15, 1973 - July 9, 2019) was a Canadian advocate for the disabled, journalist, and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) television and radio producer. Early life and education Ing Min Wong was born in Vancouver, BC, to parents John and King Wong. Born with spinal muscular atrophy, she used a motorized wheelchair throughout her life. She graduated from the Ryerson School of Journalism in 1993. Career Wong joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1993. According to a 2012 survey by Statistics Canada, around 3.8 million adult Canadians reported being "limited in their daily activities due to a disability". This represented 13.7% of the adult population. The three most-prevalent forms of disability in Canada are chronic pain issues, mobility, and flexibility limitations. Around 11% of Canadian adults experience one of these disability types, and 40% of those people have had all three at the same time.
