Central Station (Brussels)
Brussels-Central railway station (; ) is a railway and metro station in central Brussels, Belgium. It is the second busiest railway station in Belgium and one of three principal railway stations in Brussels, together with Brussels-South and Brussels-North. First completed in 1952 after protracted delays caused by economic difficulties and World War II, it is the newest of Brussels' main rail hubs. The train services are operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB/NMBS). Brussels-Central is connected to the rapid transit Gare Centrale/Centraal Station station on lines 1 and 5 of the Brussels Metro system, and serves as an important node of the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB/MIVB). Brussels Metro Line 1
Line 1 is a rapid transit line on the Brussels Metro in Belgium operated by STIB/MIVB. It has existed in its current form since 4 April 2009, when former line 1B, which ran between Stockel/Stokkel and Erasme/Erasmus, was shortened to Gare de l'Ouest/Weststation. The section between Gare de l'Ouest and Erasme is now served by line 5. The line serves 21 metro stations, and has a common section with line 5 between Gare de l'Ouest and Merode, and with lines 2 and 6 between Gare de l'Ouest and Beekkant. At Arts-Loi/Kunst-Wet, the line also connects with lines 2 and 6. Railway connections are possible at Brussels-Central, Brussels-Schuman, Merode and Brussels-West. June 2017 Brussels Attack
On 20 June 2017, a terrorist bomb caused a small explosion at Brussels-Central railway station in Brussels, Belgium; there were no casualties. Soldiers patrolling the station subsequently killed the suspect with three to four shots, according to eyewitnesses. The perpetrator was Oussama Zariouh, a 36-year-old Moroccan national who lived in the Molenbeek municipality and who had assembled a defective explosive device. Background After the Paris attacks that killed 130 people in 2015 and the Brussels bombings of 2016 that killed 32 civilians, soldiers were on patrol in Brussels to increase security. The Molenbeek municipality, where many of the perpetrators of the 2016 bombings lived, underwent a large-scale administrative check-up, with over 20,000 inhabitants being checked by law enforcement agencies. Zaventem () is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, in the Flemish region of Belgium. Putterie
The (French language, French, ) or (Dutch language, Dutch, ) is a former quarter (urban subdivision), quarter of central Brussels, Belgium. The district was centred around Saint Mary Magdalene's Church, between the /, the / and the current /. It was largely destroyed starting in the 1920s with the works of the North–South connection, a major railway link through central Brussels, to develop the area for Brussels-Central railway station and other modern office buildings. Many historic structures were lost in the demolition process. Some of the area was redeveloped in the 1980s and 1990s with varying degrees of success, with buildings in the New Classical architecture and the New Brick Renaissance style, following the principles of New Urbanism and the European Urban Renaissance. The Small Ring (, ; , ) inner ring road, formally R20 and N0, is a series of roadways in central Brussels, Belgium, surrounding the historic city centre.
