Central (Kolkata Metro)
Central is an underground metro station on the North-South corridor of the Blue Line of Kolkata Metrowhich is located on the crossing of Bepin Behari Ganguly Street and Central Avenue in Bowbazar, Central in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Structure The station has a central island platform and two side platforms. Between each side platform and the island platform is a track, serving up and down trains. The station was built in this layout as it was anticipated that the Green Line will interchange with Blue Line at this station and the layout will effectively handle all the traffic. However, that did not happen and the side platforms are not used. Instead of opening doors on both sides, trains open doors on the right side, that is towards the island platform. Bepin Behari Ganguly Street, or B.B. Ganguly Street, formerly known as Bow Bazar Street or Bowbazar Street, is an east-west road in Central Kolkata, capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It passes through Bowbazar area and connects Baithakkhana Market (Sealdah) and Sealdah Station with Bentinck Street/Rabindra Sarani crossing (Lalbazar) via Amherst Street (Kolkata), Amherst Street crossing, Nirmal Chandra Street/College Street (Kolkata), College Street crossing and Chittaranjan Avenue, Central Avenue crossing. Bhowanipore
Bhowanipore (also Bhowanipur; ) is a neighbourhood of South Kolkata in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal. History In 1717, the East India Company obtained the right to rent from 38 villages surrounding their settlement from the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar. Of these, 5 lay across the Hooghly in what is now Howrah district. The remaining 33 villages were on the Calcutta side. After the fall of Siraj-ud-daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, it purchased these villages in 1758 from Mir Jafar, and reorganised them. These villages were known en-bloc as '' Dihi Panchannagram'' and Bhowanipore was one of them. It was considered to be a suburb beyond the limits of the Maratha Ditch. Bhowanipore existed as a ''dihi'' in 1765 and also absorbed a part of Dihi Chakraberia. The Kolkata Tram System, is a tram system that serves Kolkata, the capital city of the Indian States and union territories of India, state of West Bengal, operated by West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) after Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) was merged with WBTC. Being started in 1873 Kolkata tram is the second oldest operating tram network in the world after trams in Turin, Turin (1871). Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) is a Government of India enterprise formed in 2008. The agency was formed to oversee the implementing Kolkata Metro Green Line, also known as East–West Metro, connecting the twin cities Kolkata and Howrah.
