Central, Indiana
Central is an unincorporated community in Heth Township, Harrison County, Indiana. History The town of Central was plotted by William Smith in 1890. It originally contained fifteen lots, two parallel streets covering of land. The church in the center of town was deeded its land from Charles Kopp in 1882. The original church then deeded in turn to the Missionary Society of the Churches of Christ in 1907. Longbottom-Hardsaw, a business operating in Central, was built in 1947 on the corner of Central Drive SW and Heth Washington Road SW. A Dollar General store is located at the northwest corner of State Road 135 and Heth Washington Road SW. The Central Post office was operated from 1879 until 1999 when the area was taken over by the Mauckport and Corydon Post Offices. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. New Amsterdam, Indiana
New Amsterdam is a town located in Washington Township, Harrison County, Indiana, United States, along the Ohio River. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 12. As of the 2020 Census, New Amsterdam was the smallest city, town, or Census Designated Place in the state of Indiana. History The first settlers in what became New Amsterdam were James Riley and Jacob Youstler. Starting in 1815, they lived in New Amsterdam for several years before relocating further north. The town was formally platted on September 19, 1815, by Jacob Funk and Samuel McAdams. The town relied on the Ohio River for its growth, as it was the main transportation route for migrating settlers as well as traders up and down river. Corydon, Indiana
Corydon is a town in Harrison Township, Harrison County, Indiana. Located north of the Ohio River in the extreme southern part of the U.S. state of Indiana, it is the seat of government for Harrison County. Corydon was founded in 1808 and served as the capital of the Indiana Territory from 1813 to 1816. It was the site of Indiana's first constitutional convention, which was held June 10–29, 1816. Forty-three convened to consider statehood for Indiana and drafted its first state constitution. Under Article XI, Section 11, of the Indiana 1816 constitution, Corydon was designated as the capital of the state until 1825, when the seat of state government was moved to Indianapolis. Mauckport, Indiana
Mauckport is a town in Heth Township, Harrison County, Indiana, along the Ohio River. The population was 81 at the 2010 census. History In the earliest times Daniel Boone and his brothers, most notably Squire Boone, were regularly in the area of Mauckport. Squire Boone settled in the area in 1806. Squire Boone's remains are just north of Mauckport in the Squire Boone Caverns. The Mauckport area's earliest permanent settlers came from the Shenandoah Valley and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Maucks, a German immigrant family who first settled in that area. The town itself is built upon land granted to John Peter Mauck in an 1811 land grant.
