Cemetery Skyline is a Finnish-Swedish gothic rock/metal supergroup formed by Mikael Stanne, Markus Vanhala, Santeri Kallio, Victor Brandt and Vesa Ranta in 2024. History The band was formed in 2024 and played their first show at John Smith festival in Finland. The founding members are Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquility), Markus Vanhala (Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum), Santeri Kallio (Amorphis), Victor Brandt (Dimmu Borgir) and Vesa Ranta (Sentenced). They released their first album, ''Nordic Gothic'', in October 2024 through Century Media Records. Leading up to the release, the band released videos for their songs "Violent Storm", "The Coldest Heart", "Torn Away" and "In Darkness". ''Nordic Gothic'' debuted at number 3 on the Finnish album chart and at number 1 on the Finnish physical album chart the week after its release. Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. The sensibilities of the genre led the lyrics to represent the evil of the century and the romantic idealization of death and the supernatural imagination. The Mission (band)
The Mission (known as the Mission UK in the United States) are an English gothic rock band formed in 1986. Initially known as the Sisterhood, the band was started by frontman Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams (both from the Sisters of Mercy), soon adding drummer Mick Brown ( Red Lorry Yellow Lorry) and guitarist Simon Hinkler ( Artery and Pulp). Aside from Hussey, the lineup has changed several times during the years and the band has been on hiatus twice. HIM (sometimes stylized as H.I.M.) was a Finnish gothic rock band from Helsinki. First formed in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo and bassist Mige (musician), Mikko "Mige" Paananen under the name His Infernal Majesty, the band broke up after only a few years, only to be reformed in 1995 by Valo and guitarist Linde Lindström, Mikko "Linde" Lindström. Fields of the Nephilim are an English gothic rock band formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in 1984. The band's name refers to a biblical race of angel-human hybrids known as the Nephilim. Career Early years (1984–1991) The band's debut 12" EP, ''Burning the Fields'', was first released in 1985 on their own Tower Release label and was quickly picked up by Jungle Records, who put them in the studio for further recordings that became the ''Returning to Gehenna'' 12" EP. Tiamat is a Swedish metal band that formed in Stockholm in 1987 and led by Johan Edlund. The band went through a number of stylistic changes in their earlier releases before settling on gothic metal. History Initially, the band had the name Treblinka and a style of black metal, black/death metal. The Sisters of Mercy are an English rock band formed in Leeds in 1980. After achieving early underground fame, the band experienced a commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s, sustaining their success until the early 1990s, when they halted the release of new records in protest against their record company, WEA. Currently, although the band operates primarily as a touring outfit, they continue to perform new and unreleased music live. Type O Negative
Type O Negative was an American gothic/doom metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York City in 1989 by Peter Steele (bass, lead vocals), Kenny Hickey (guitar, co-lead vocals), Josh Silver (keyboards, backing vocals), and Sal Abruscato (drums, percussion), who was later replaced by Johnny Kelly. Their lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death resulted in the nickname "the Drab Four" (in homage to the Beatles' "Fab Four" moniker).
