Cemetery Of Distinguished Citizens
The Cemetery of Distinguished Citizens (Spanish language, Spanish, ''Cementerio de los Ilustres'') is a cemetery located in San Salvador and together with the Cemetery of La Barmeja, it forms the Cemetery General in San Salvador. It is the burial place of prominent families of the capital of El Salvador and many outstanding figures from the history of this country. General The cemetery was blessed by Bishop Tomás Occeli on August 26, 1849 as the first civil cemetery in El Salvador. This place contains the mausoleum of the president of the Federal Republic of Central America, Francisco Morazán, whose remains had been transferred from Costa Rica. However, in 1882, during the administration of President Rafael Zaldívar, a second mausoleum of the liberal caudillo was erected, since the first one had been damaged by the earthquake of 1873. Enrico Massi
Enrico Massi (29 October 1897 – 4 October 1923) was an Italian aviator. He is considered a pioneer of aviation in El Salvador. Biography His parents were Augusto Massi and Carlota Pascarella. In World War I he was a pilot and flight instructor for the Italian Royal Navy, and after the conflict, he worked as a test pilot in the Monte Celio experiment field. Later he made acrobatic presentations in Africa and Asia with Mario D'Urso, and in 1922 he was hired by Fiat S.p.A. again as a test pilot. In same year he arrived in the American continent along with other Italians at the invitation of the Honduran government, to form an aviation school, but this objective was not met. Jacobo Árbenz
Juan Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán (; 14 September 191327 January 1971) was a Guatemalan military officer and politician who served as the 25th president of Guatemala. He was Minister of National Defense from 1944 to 1950, before he became the second democratically elected President of Guatemala, from 1951 to 1954. He was a major figure in the ten-year Guatemalan Revolution, which represented some of the few years of representative democracy in Guatemalan history. Morena Celarié (b. April 20, 1922 – d. April 22, 1972) was a Salvadoran folk dancer. She was born in San Salvador and began her dancing career at a young age. Celarié performed throughout the Western world and founded a folk dancing school in her native country. When cured of paralysis in one of her legs after a promise to the Virgin of Guadalupe, she dressed only in white until her death. Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta (; 23 August 1943 – 20 February 1992) was a Salvadoran military officer, neo-fascist politician, and death squad leader. In 1981, he co-founded and became the first leader of the far-right Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) and served as president of the Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 1983. He was a presidential candidate for 1984 presidential election, losing in the second round to José Napoleón Duarte, the former president of the Revolutionary Government Junta. Schafik Jorge Hándal Hándal (; October 14, 1930 – January 24, 2006) was a Salvadoran politician. Biography Born in Usulután, he was the son of Palestinian immigrants from the town of Bethlehem. Arturo Ambrogi
Arturo Ambrogi (1874 – 1936 in San Salvador, El Salvador) was a writer and journalist, considered one of the pioneers of Salvadoran literature, along with Francisco Gavidia and Alberto Masferrer. Ambrogi's narrative was influenced by romance and Spanish American modernism and his stories are chronicles of all aspects of traditional peasant life in El Salvador. The son of an Italian immigrant, at 16 years old, he met the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío. Working as a journalist, he traveled in his youth in Europe, South America and the Far East. On his travels he met Uruguayan writer José Ingenieros. He received an elite training in literature to the point that he was arguably the best informed of his era in El Salvador. He never married or had children, although his brother Constantino Ambrogi Acosta settled in Nicaragua where their offspring have continued the literary tradition.
