La Teja is a ''barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, Uruguay. The neighborhood has a mix of residential and industrial properties, mostly occupied by working class communities, including with a number of informal settlements built on former industrial sites. The barrio is notable for its high concentration of industrial sites, including the La Teja Refinery, that have spawned a local environmental justice activism community. María Auxiliadora Delgado
María Auxiliadora Delgado San Martín (11 March 1937 – 31 July 2019) was an Uruguayan civil servant, health advocate, and wife of President Tabaré Vázquez. She served as First Lady of Uruguay from 2005 to 2010 and from 2015 up to her death in 2019. Early life Auxiliadora met her husband, Tabaré Vázquez, when he was just 16 years old, and she was 19 years old. She worked for the Caja de Jubilaciones y Pensiones (Pension Fund) for 32 years before her retirement. First Lady Auxiliadora's signature initiative as First Lady was a national program to improve dental health and oral hygiene. She oversaw the national campaign, with an emphasis on students from rural schools and communities. Abdón Porte (1893 – 5 March 1918) was a Uruguayan Association football, footballer who played as defensive midfielder. Nicknamed ''El Indio'' he won many titles with his club Club Nacional de Football, Nacional, and also a Copa América with the Uruguay national football team, Uruguay national team. Carlos Solé (October 9, 1916 – May 9, 1975) was an Uruguayan sports journalist. Biography He was born on October 9, 1916, in Montevideo. On October 12, 1935, three days after his 18th birthday he debuted as a sportscaster on CX6 Radio SODRE, broadcasting the soccer game between Bella Vista and River Plate of Uruguay. This was not his radio debut as he had already worked on several stations as a weatherman. Solé earned his greatest interest from the public when he broadcast from Rio de Janeiro, the final match of the 1950 World Cup between Brazil and Uruguay. Uruguay beat Brazil 2-1 and thanks to this historic broadcast the Uruguayan population heard of this great accomplishment in soccer history. Raúl Sendic Antonaccio (March 16, 1926 – April 28, 1989) was a Uruguayan lawyer, trade unionist and founder of the National Liberation Movement – Tupamaros (MLN–T). After beginning his legal career organising agricultural workers and agitating for land reform, he moved into militant activism and established the MLN–T to carry out urban guerrilla warfare against the Uruguayan state. He was arrested and imprisoned by the civic-military dictatorship of Uruguay, only being released after the transition to democracy. As the Tupamaros shifted once more to legal, political activities, Sendic died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Tabaré Ramón Vázquez Rosas (; 17 January 19406 December 2020) was a Uruguayan politician and oncologist who served as the 39th and 41st President of Uruguay from 2005 to 2010 and from 2015 to 2020. During his political career, Vázquez was a member of the Broad Front coalition.
