Celia Herrera Rodriguez
Celia Herrera Rodriguez (born November 26, 1952, in Sacramento, California) is an American educator, painter, and performance and installation artist. Biography Rodriguez is originally from Sacramento, California and she was born on November 26, 1952. She has taught programs including Chicano Studies at the University of California, Berkeley for seventeen years. She has also been an adjunct professor in the Diversity Studies program at California College for the Arts of the San Francisco Bay Area. Herrera Rodriguez is also the co-founder and co-director of Las Maestras Center for Xicana Indigenous Thought, Art and Social Practice at UCSB, where she teaches Chicana Art History and Studio Practice in the Department of Chicano and Chicana Studies. Chicana art emerged as part of the Chicano Movement in the 1960s. It used art to express political and social resistance through different art mediums. Chicana artists explore and interrogate traditional Mexican-American values and embody feminist themes through different mediums such as murals, painting, and photography. The momentum created from the Chicano Movement spurred a ''Chicano Renaissance'' among Chicanas and Chicanos. Artists voiced their concerns about opression and empowerment in all areas of race, gender, class, and sexuality. The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)—officially known as the Jorge M.
