Celestine Raalte
Celestine Raalte (born 12 November 1948) is a writer and performance artist from Suriname living in the Netherlands. She was born in the Commewijne District. During the 1970s, she was a member of the Surinamese women's group Sranan S'ma Abi Wan Oso. Her work first appeared in the 1981 anthology ''Tide tamara, Dichten voor het volk''. Raalte moved to Utrecht in 1986. In 1989, she published her first collection of poems, ''Akwenda / Streven''. This was followed by ''Ma Awitya'' in 1997. Both works also appeared in Dutch. Celestine Raalte has published works in both Dutch and Sranan Tongo. Her work has also appeared in various magazines and in the 1995 anthology ''Spiegel van de Surinaamse poëzie''. Raalte also wrote the play ''Witte de Witlaan 25''. In 1997, she received the Kwakoe Award for her contribution to Surinamese art. Sranan Tongo
Sranan Tongo (Sranantongo, "Surinamese tongue", Sranan, Surinamese Creole) is an English-based creole language from Suriname, in South America, where it is the first or second language for 519,600 Surinamese people (approximately 80% of the population). It is also spoken in the Netherlands and across the Surinamese diaspora. It is considered both an unofficial national language and a ''lingua franca''. Sranan Tongo developed among enslaved Africans from Central and West Africa, especially along the Caribbean coastline, after contact with English planters and indentured workers from 1651–67. Its use expanded to the Dutch colonists who took over the territory in 1667 and decided to maintain the local language as a ''lingua franca''. Honorary Order Of The Yellow Star
The Honorary Order of the Yellow Star ( Dutch: ''Ere-Orde van de Gele Ster'') is the highest state decoration of the Republic of Suriname. The Order was instituted in 1975 at the independence of Suriname and replaced the Dutch Order of the Netherlands Lion.
