Cecilia Eckelmann Battistello
Cecilia Eckelmann Battistello (13 April 1950 – 6 March 2024) was an Italian-born British businesswoman who was president and managing director of the Contship Italia Group. Life and career Battistello started her career in the shipping industry in Switzerland as a commercial representative for Contship Containerlines. In 1988, she was appointed managing director of the company and in 1989 she became the first woman to chair the UK India Pakistan Bangladesh Shipping Conference. In 1993, she assumed the role of vice-president and in 1996 she was elected chairman and CEO. In 1998, after the sale of Contship Containerlines to CP Ships she resigned as Board Chairman and became President of Contship Italia. From 2005 to 2010 she was President of FEPORT (Federation of European Private Port Operators). Contship Italia Group is an Italian container terminal, intermodal and logistics operator. History Contship, “Container Shipping”, founded by the Italian entrepreneur Angelo Ravano, was specialised in maritime transport and, in particular, container transport. By the end of the Nineties, Contship was a global company with services running to South America, the United States, the Pacific, sub-continental Australia and the Middle East. One of its subsidiaries, Contship Italia, had been active in La Spezia since 1971 where it ran the first Italian private container terminal. In 1997 Contship’s shipping lines were sold to the CP Ships Group (today under the brand Hapag Lloyd) and thus the name Contship Containerlines disappeared. Contship Containerlines was a global container carrier operating from 1969 to 2005 in the India/Pakistan, Levant, Australia/New Zealand, South America and Asia trade, mainly to and from Europe. The company was founded just as containerization was beginning and continuously grew up with the growth of this market. History In 1968 Dr. Angelo Ravano founded Contship SA in Switzerland. The company's first sailing was undertaken by the MV ''Sea Maid'' from Marseille, Fos to Casablanca in October 1969. During 1970 an agency arm was set up in Milan and terminal operations were started at La Spezia. Some were handled in the first year. A European network with subsidiaries in Spain and the Netherlands in 1973 and 1974 was built up. CP Ships
CP Ships was a large Canadian shipping company established in the 19th century. From the late 1880s until after World War II, the company was Canada's largest operator of Atlantic and Pacific steamships. Many immigrants travelled on CP ships from Europe to Canada. In 1914 the sinking of the Canadian Pacific steamship just before World War I became the largest maritime disaster in Canadian history. The company provided Canadian Merchant Navy vessels in World Wars I and II. Twelve vessels were lost due to enemy action in World War II, including the , which was the largest ship ever sunk by a German U-boat.
