Cayman Islands National Rugby Union Team
The Cayman Islands national rugby union team represents the Cayman Islands in the sport of rugby union. They have thus far not qualified for a Rugby World Cup, but have participated in qualifying tournaments. The sport in the Cayman Islands is governed by the Cayman Rugby Union. The Cayman Islands have players throughout the squad playing through the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Canada and the USA. As of 2019, the Cayman Islands competes in the Rugby Americas Challenge along with Columbia, Mexico and Paraguay. In 2019 they were crowned champions of the Caribbean after representing the Northern Caribbean region and beating Guyana (who were the champions of the Southern region) by 58 to 14 on 9 February 2019. The Cayman Islands will be the fourth team to qualify for the Americas Rugby Challenge which will be held later in the Summer of 2019. The Cayman Islands women's national rugby union team are a national sporting side of Cayman Islands, representing them at rugby union. The side played its first 15-a-side test in 2004. History In the late 1990s women’s touch rugby was flourishing in the Cayman Islands under the guidance of Chris “Jacko” Jackson. A small core of all round sports women (Tracy Iler, Mitch Taylor, Lisa Kehoe) and contact rugby veterans (Karen Jessop and Jessica Lane) were keen to take the next step into forming a women’s contact rugby team. With the employment of Richard Adams as the CRFU’s first Director of Rugby in 2000 momentum began to grow until ex-rugby league professional, Steve “Smudger” Smith, was enlisted as the first women’s contact rugby coach. Rugby Americas North, abbreviated as RAN, is the governing body for rugby union in the North American continental region. Rugby Americas North operates under the authority of World Rugby, and is one of six regional unions represented within it. The Jamaica national rugby union team represents Jamaica in the sport of rugby union. The team has thus far not qualified for a Rugby World Cup but has participated in qualifying tournaments. The national side is ranked 67th in the world (as of 29 July 2019). History Jamaica played their first rugby international in 1960 losing 3-6 in a match with Trinidad and Tobago. The 2007 Rugby World Cup was the sixth Rugby World Cup, a quadrennial international rugby union competition inaugurated in 1987. Twenty nations competed for the Webb Ellis Cup in the tournament, which was hosted by France from 7 September to 20 October. France won the hosting rights in 2003, beating a bid from England. The competition consisted of 48 matches over 44 days; 42 matches were played in ten cities throughout France, as well as four in Cardiff, Wales, and two in Edinburgh, Scotland.
