Cavallazza
The Cavallazza is a mountain of Trentino, Italy, with an elevation of . Part of the Lagorai range, it lies within the borders of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park. During the First World War the mountain was on the frontline between Italy and Austria-Hungary; initially held by the Austro-Hungarians, it was seized by the Italians on 21 July 1916. Trenches and tunnels dug by the Alpini can be seen to this day. Lagorai
The Lagorai is a mountain range in the Eastern Alps, in Trentino, northern Italy. It is located between the Monte Panarotta (16 km) from Trento and Rolle Pass, for a length of some 70 km. It is bounded southwards by the Valsugana, by the Val di Fiemme from the north, the Val di Cembra from the west and the Primiero and Vanoi eastwards. The chain is mostly made of porphyry rocks. It was the site of fierce mine warfare on the Italian Front in the First World War. The north-eastern part in the massif is part of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park. Near the Rolle Pass, at 2,000 m altitude, are the small lakes of Colbricon, home of pre-historic settlements dating to the Neolithic age. Paneveggio-Pale Di San Martino Natural Park
The Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park () is a nature reserve in Trentino, Italy. Established in 1967, it stretches over nearly in the Dolomites (in the territory of seven municipalities, all in the Province of Trento), encompassing the Pale di San Martino massif, the Paneveggio forest, and the easternmost part of the Lagorai range, between the valleys of Fiemme, Fassa, Primiero, and Vanoi. When originally established, the park had an area of , which was increased by another in 1987. The lowest point is about above sea level, whereas the highest point is the Vezzana, the highest peak of the Pala group, above sea level. Alpini
The Alpini are the Italian Army's specialist mountain infantry. Part of the army's infantry corps, the speciality distinguished itself in combat during World War I and World War II. Currently the active Alpini units are organized in two operational brigades, which are subordinate to the Alpine Troops Headquarters. The Alpini's name comes from their inceptive association with the Alps, the mountain range that Italy shares with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Passo Rolle
The Rolle Pass () (1989 m) is a mountain pass in Trentino in Italy which can be reached by motor vehicles. It connects the Fiemme and Primiero valleys, and the communities of Predazzo, San Martino di Castrozza and Fiera di Primiero. The pass road was built between 1863 and 1874, when the area still belonged to Austria-Hungary. The pass lies within the Parco Naturale Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino. San Martino Di Castrozza
San Martino di Castrozza is a mountain resort in the Primiero valley in the Trentino province in Italy. The western part, with 428 inhabitants, is in the comune of Siror, with the eastern, housing 135 inhabitants, in Tonadico. History The first buildings on the site of San Martino were a religious institution, the hospice of saints Martino and Giuliano, which welcomed travelers crossing the Alps by the Rolle Pass between the valleys of Primiero and Val di Fiemme, Fiemme. All that remains of the hospice is the church of San Martino, which has a romanesque bell-tower. The first alpine hotel in San Martino was built by the Irish traveller, John Ball (naturalist), John Ball in 1873. By the 1900s, San Martino di Castrozza was already established as a tourist destination for the wealthy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, of which Trentino then formed part.
