Caught By The Tides
''Caught by the Tides'' () is a 2024 Chinese drama film directed by Jia Zhangke, and written by Wan Jianhuan and Zhangke, based on footage across 22 years, some from Jia's previous films, in an impressionistic non-linear blend of fiction and non-fiction. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where had its world premiere on 18 May 2024. Plot In 2001, in the northern Chinese city of Datong, a working-class woman named Qiao Qiao has a romantic relationship with her manager Guao Bin as she hustles to make a living as a singer, model, and club girl. Bin leaves Datong to try to earn a living in another province, sending Qiao Qiao a text message that says he will bring her when he has money. Jia Zhangke
Jia Zhangke ( zh, s=贾樟柯, born 24 May 1970) is a Chinese film and television director, screenwriter, producer, actor and writer. He is the founder of Pingyao International Film Festival, dean of the Shanxi Film Academy of Shanxi Media College and the dean of the Shanghai Vancouver Film School at Shanghai University. He graduated from the Literature Department of Beijing Film Academy. He is generally regarded as a leading figure of the "Cinema of China#The sixth generation, Sixth Generation" movement of Chinese cinema, a group that also includes such figures as Wang Xiaoshuai, Lou Ye, Wang Quan'an and Zhang Yuan (director), Zhang Yuan. ''Ash Is Purest White'' ( zh, 江湖儿女; 'Sons and Daughters of Jianghu') is a 2018 Chinese drama written and directed by Jia Zhangke. The story is loosely based on the leader of a gang from Jia Zhangke's childhood, whom he had admired as a role model. The film had its world premiere at the main competition of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival on 11 May 2018, where it was nominated for the ''Palme d'Or''. It was theatrically released in China on 21 September 2018. Like the rest of Jia's films, it opened to widespread acclaim. Plot In 2001, Qiao and her boyfriend Bin, a mob boss, have a lot of power in Datong, an old mining city that has become poor since the coal prices dropped. The 29th Busan International Film Festival () opened on October 2 at the Busan Cinema Center in Busan, with South Korean film ''Uprising (2024 film), Uprising'' by Kim Sang-man, and screened 278 films from 63 countries, including 224 officially invited films and 54 community beef screenings.
