Josef Berne
Josef Berne (January 19, 1904 – December 19, 1964) was a Russian-born American writer, film director and producer. Berne was born Josef Berstein on January 19, 1904, in Kyiv, Russia (now Ukraine). He also wrote and directed Yiddish language dramas. He directed 32 films between 1933 and 1950, most of which were short films. He died on December 19, 1964, aged 60 in Palm Springs, California. Richard Koszarski (born December 18, 1947) is a film historian. He was the founder of , and served as editor-in-chief from 1987 to 2012. He is a professor emeritus of English and film at Rutgers University in New Jersey. His collection of material on the early history of the Universal Pictures is held in the Library of Congress. The National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) is an independent, nonprofit organization created by the U.S. Congress to help save America's film heritage. ''The Miami News'' was an evening newspaper in Miami, Florida. It was the media market competitor to the morning edition of the '' Miami Herald'' for most of the 20th century. The paper started publishing in May 1896 as a weekly called ''The Miami Metropolis''. The ''Metropolis'' had become a daily (except Sunday) paper of eight pages by 1903. Julius Adler (September 23, 1906 – December 28, 1994) was a Jewish-American actor, writer, and director in Yiddish theater. Career He was born in Biłgoraj, Poland into an Orthodox Jewish family. When his father died six years later his mother emigrated to America leaving the children with grandparents. In 1920 the family was reunited in the United States and Julius began to work in theater. Hymie Jacobson, also known as Hy Jacobson (1895–1952), was an American actor and composer in Yiddish vaudeville, films and theater. Born 1895 in Chicago to actors Joseph and Bessie Jacobson. His sister, Henrietta, married Yiddish theatre actor Julius Adler; his brother, Irving, was also a performer. He and Irving also owned some of the key venues for Yiddish theater in New York City. He played child roles from the age of 4 in Cincinnati. His first adult role was at the Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia (1917) as the comic in ''Panie Romani''. In 1918 he played in the Peoples Theater and the following year was buff-comic (the company buffoon) at the Second Avenue Theater in the Yiddish Theater District.
