Catocala Whitneyi
''Catocala whitneyi'', or Whitney's underwing, is a moth of the family Erebidae. The species was Species description, first described by G. M. Dodge in 1874. It is found in North America from North Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas eastward through Wisconsin to Ohio and Tennessee. It has also been recorded as far west as Minnesota and Utah. In Canada, it has been found in Manitoba. The wingspan is 45–50 mm. Adults are on wing from July to August in one generation depending on the location. The larvae feed on ''Amorpha'' species. Moths are a paraphyletic group of insects that includes all members of the order Lepidoptera that are not butterflies, with moths making up the vast majority of the order. ''Catocala'' is a generally Holarctic genus of moths in the family Erebidae. The genus was erected by Franz von Paula Schrank in 1802. The moths are commonly known as underwing moths or simply underwings. These terms are sometimes used for a few related moths, but usually – especially when used in plural, not as part of a species name – they are used to refer to ''Catocala'' only. Of the more than 250 known species, slightly less than half are found in North America – mostly in the United States – while the rest occur in Eurasia. ''Amorpha'' is a genus of plants in the pea family, Fabaceae. All the species are native to North America, from southern Canada, most of the United States (US), and northern Mexico. They are commonly known as false indigo. The name ''Amorpha'' means "deformed" or "without form" in Greek and was given because flowers of this genus only have one petal, unlike the usual "pea-shaped" flowers of the Faboideae subfamily. The Erebidae are a family of moths in the superfamily Noctuoidea. The family is among the largest families of moths by species count and contains a wide variety of well-known macromoth groups.
