Cato Alexander
Cato Alexander (c. 1780–1858) was a freedman and bartender. Cato was born a slave in New York City, New York, where he was forced to work in an inn where he frequently waited on George Washington. After gaining his freedom in 1799, he continued to work in hotels and inns, before opening his own bar, Cato's Tavern, located on what is now the site of 54th Street (Manhattan)#Second Avenue, 2nd Avenue, 54th Street in Manhattan. Famed Irish actor Tyrone Power (Irish actor), Tyrone Power considered him "foremost amongst cullers of mint ... for Mint julep, julep" and "second to no man as a compounder of cock-tail." He was known for his expertise in crafting punches as well. The ''New York Post'' published a poem in celebration of his wedding. Cato Wadel (29 March 1936 − 21 April 2011) was a Norwegian social anthropologist. He was born in Oslo, but grew up in Flekkefjord. He graduated from the University of Bergen in 1966 and was hired as assistant professor at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1967. He returned to Norway as associate professor at the University of Oslo in 1970, then at the University of Tromsø from 1972. He was a professor in Tromsø from 1974 to 1983, then associate professor at Rogaland University College from 1986 and professor from 1993 to 2005. In addition he resumed his tenure at the University of Tromsø as adjunct professor from 1990. Wadel studied peripheral communities in Norway and Newfoundland, often fisher's' communities. Cato Sells (October 6, 1859 – December 30, 1948) was a commissioner at the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1913 to 1921. Life and career He was born in Vinton, Iowa, on October 6, 1859. He lost his father when he was young. He entered Cornell College in 1875. In 1878 he read law with Charles Alvord Bishop and in 1880 was admitted to Iowa State Bar Association and began practice at La Porte City, Iowa. In 1889 he moved to Vinton, Iowa, and served on the Iowa State Central Committee. In 1887 he was chairman of the committee and was a delegate to the 1888 Democratic National Convention. Cato Schiøtz (born 26 July 1948) is a Norwegian barrister. He was born in Oslo. He worked as a lecturer at the University of Oslo from 1975 to 1978, and also as a deputy judge in Sør-Gudbrandsdal District Court, Sør-Gudbrandsdal before being hired in the law firm Advokatfirmaet Schjødt, Schjødt in 1978. He became a partner in the firm in 1983. After 40 years, in 2018 he moved on to the law firm Glittertind. Cato Perkins
Cato Perkins was an slave, enslaved African-American man from Charleston, South Carolina, who became a missionary to Sierra Leone. Cato was enslaved by John Perkins. Cato Perkins self-emancipated by joining the British during the Siege of Charleston, and he joined General Clinton in New York (state), New York and worked as a carpenter there. Perkins was evacuated to Birchtown, Nova Scotia, in 1783, and he is listed in the ''Book of Negroes''. Upon arriving in Nova Scotia, he was converted by John Marrant of the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion, which was a Methodist splinter group. Perkins was ordained into the church and later took over the running of it. Perkins migrated to Sierra Leone, where he led a strike of carpenters against the Sierra Leone Company. Cato Nnamdi June (born November 18, 1979) is an American football coach and former player who is an assistant linebackers coach for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). He played as a linebacker in the NFL after being selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL draft. Cato (spy)
Cato was an enslaved African American Black Patriot spy and courier operating out of British-occupied New York City during the American Revolution. Cato's enslaver, Hercules Mulligan, gathered intelligence through his connections as well as clients at his tailoring shop. Cato carried the information to Continental Army officers and other revolutionaries, including Alexander Hamilton and George Washington, often crossing the Hudson River into New Jersey. Cato's messages are credited with saving Washington's life on at least two occasions. After the war, Cato was granted his freedom in return for his service and moved to Plymouth, Massachusetts. Besides his intelligence activities with Mulligan, little definite information about Cato is available.
