Catholic Guides Of Ireland
The Catholic Guides of Ireland () is one of the two Guiding organisations in the Republic of Ireland. It has members in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Catholic Guides of Ireland began in 1928 and thus in 2003 celebrated 75 years of Guiding in Ireland. Together with the Irish Girl Guides it forms the Council of Irish Guiding Associations. In total three Guide associations operate on the island of Ireland. The other two are Irish Girl Guides (IGG) and Girlguiding Ulster, part of Girlguiding UK. Emily McCann is the chief commissioner for CGI. Memberships The Catholic Guides of Ireland is a member of the Council of Irish Guiding Associations, the national Guiding federation of Ireland. Irish Girl Guides
The Irish Girl Guides () is a Girl Guides organisation in the Republic of Ireland. Together with the Catholic Guides of Ireland, it forms the Council of Irish Guiding Associations. Whereas the Catholic Guides are an all-Ireland body, the Irish Girl Guides are not organised in Northern Ireland, where Girlguiding Ulster, the branch of Girlguiding UK, operates instead. History As a soldier, the Founder of Scouting and Guiding, Robert Baden-Powell discovered that boys could be trained and used to help in emergencies. He held an experimental camp at Brownsea Island in Dorset in 1907 at which the boys were divided into patrols and trained to be self-reliant. Council Of Irish Guiding Associations
The Council of Irish Guiding Associations () is the national Guiding federation of the Republic of Ireland. Guiding in Ireland started in 1911, and Ireland became a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) in 1932. The council serves 13,837 Guides (as of 2008). History The Irish Girl Guides (GGI) became a member of WAGGGS in 1932. About the same time, the first independent companies of Catholic Guides were founded in Ireland. Girlguiding Ulster is one of the nine regions of Girlguiding UK. Its headquarters are at Lorne House, County Down. In 2006, there were approximately 500 units across Northern Ireland. In 1974, the Guides' headquarters in Belfast were burned down. Girlguiding is the operating name of The Guide Association in the United Kingdom, previously named The Girl Guides Association, which was formed in 1910. It is the original Girl Guides organisation in the world and, in 1928, became a founding member organisation of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). It is a registered charity and operates the largest girl-only youth organisation in the UK. Participants take on adventurous activities, such as climbing, canoeing, sailing and orienteering and have the opportunity to get involved in camps and international events, including girl-only festivals and overseas development projects.
