Castro County
Castro County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 7,371. Its county seat is Dimmitt. The county was named for Henri Castro, who was consul general to France for the Republic of Texas and the founder of a colony in Texas. The county was created in 1876 and was organized in 1891. On April 10, 2023, an explosion and subsequent fire at South Fork Dairy, about 10 miles south of Dimmitt, resulted in the deaths of an estimated 18,000 dairy cattle. Henri Castro
Henri Castro (born Moïse Henriques de Castro, July 17, 1786 – November 3, 1865), was a French diplomat who was one of the most important empresarios of the Republic of Texas. Early life Castro, who was born in Bayonne, France, was a French diplomat of Portuguese-Jewish descent. He later immigrated to the United States and became an American citizen in 1827. In 1838, he worked as a banker in France and sought to secure a loan for the young Republic of Texas. He was then appointed as consul general for Texas by President Sam Houston. He recruited hundreds of families for emigration to Texas. Most came primarily from the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace in eastern France. They traveled to Texas from 1843 to 1847 and settled in the Medina River valley, just west of San Antonio. Texas State Highway 194
State Highway 194 (SH 194) is a state highway that travels from near Dimmitt southeast to Plainview in the Texas Panhandle. History SH 194 was designated on its current route on February 9, 1933. On September 26, 1939, the designation was extended from Plainview southeast through Petersburg, then southwest through Slaton to Tahoka, replacing SH 280. On October 22, 1940, the section of SH 194 from 3.6 miles north of the Hale–Lubbock county line to Slaton was cancelled. On November 22, 1940, the section from Plainview to 3.6 miles north of the Hale–Lubbock county line was cancelled. On March 6, 1941, the section of SH 194 from Slaton to Tahoka was cancelled. The current route parallels the Burlington Northern railway along its entire route, except for the final half mile in Plainview.
