Castambul
Castambul is a small locality near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area. History Castambul was originally named Sixth Creek, but was renamed Castambul by Price Maurice after the Kastamonu (previously Kastambul) region in the Black Sea area of Turkey. In the 1850s, Australia's first payable gold mine (the Victoria) was located in the area. The area was also home to Price Maurice, who moved to Castambul in 1856 and bred Angora goats for wool. Angora goats were introduced from Turkey to South Australia by John Haigh, who bred them near Port Lincoln. After purchasing Haigh's flock, Maurice was impressed with their potential and soon sent to Turkey for additional animals. His enterprises in South Australia were very successful but he returned to Britain with his family in 1862 for health reasons. Paracombe, South Australia
Paracombe is a small town near Adelaide, South Australia. At the 2011 census, Paracombe had a population of 343. Geography Paracombe is located south of Inglewood on the road out of Adelaide via Athelstone (Gorge Road). History The name probably originates from the Little Para River whose headwaters are in the area. It was settled in 1840–41 by John Barton Hack and John Richardson, and was a sheep station until the beginning of the 20th century. It was subdivided and, with an influx of smaller landholders, a school, post office, church and recreation hall were built, but the town did not grow much beyond this. In 1966, work started on the Kangaroo Creek Reservoir, a dam of the River Torrens, and in 1969 it was completed at a cost of $5.3 million. Cudlee Creek, South Australia
Cudlee Creek is a small town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area. History The name Cudlee Creek is probably derived from the Kaurna word ''kadli'', meaning the Dingo Creek. The first European inhabitants of Cudlee Creek settled in 1838, when William Kelly, from the Isle of Man, came to the area and established the Sulby Glen estate. A district history states that Sulby Glen was "...well-known for cheese-making. Quite a lot of wheat was grown; fruit trees were planted and a lot of potatoes marketed". Montacute, South Australia
Montacute is a small regional area in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. Montacute is located on Fifth Creek, and the mostly-rural suburb extends from Rostrevor in the west to Lenswood in the east, bounded on the north by Castambul and on the south by Norton Summit and Cherryville. The small town of Montacute Heights is located on top of the ridge between Fifth and Sixth Creeks. Montacute is reached from Adelaide via Montacute Road. Copper was discovered in the area in 1843 by Thomas Burr, and a mine was soon set up. Athelstone is a suburb of Adelaide in the City of Campbelltown, South Australia, City of Campbelltown. Kangaroo Creek Reservoir
Kangaroo Creek Reservoir is a artificial water storage reservoir in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. It was built from 1966 to 1969, by damming the River Torrens west of Cudlee Creek. The stored water is used to maintain the Hope Valley Reservoir's level via discharge through the Torrens. Water is held back by a long, high concrete clad, rock filled dam wall. In 2016, work started on changes to the dam wall and the spillway. As a result of draining the dam, the historic Batchelor's Bridge once again became visible. The work was completed in Dec 2019.
