Caseros, Buenos Aires
Caseros is a city in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It is the head town of the Tres de Febrero Partido which forms part of the Greater Buenos Aires urban conurbation. In 1852 the area was the site of an important battle in Argentine history, the Battle of Caseros. Toponymy Caseros is the deformation (by locals) of the surname of Diego Casero, who bought land there in 1781. History The lands that now belong to the towns of El Palomar and Caseros, Buenos Aires were given by Juan de Garay to Captain Juan Ruiz in the second foundation of Buenos Aires Province on 1580, thus the locals called the place Cañada de Ruiz. Caseros Prison
The Caseros Prison () was a panopticon prison in Parque Patricios, a neighborhood in the southern part of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Caseros Prison was conceived by the military dictatorships of the 1960s, originally intended as a short term holding station for prisoners awaiting trial. It was built over the course of almost twenty years, from 1960 until 1979. Finished under the administration of the military junta presided over by dictator Jorge Rafael Videla, Caseros was opened in 1979 to house political prisoners. It was built next to an old prison of the same name, which was originally constructed as an orphanage in the 1880s. In the early 1950s, Juan Perón, cracking down on communists, used the old part to house political prisoners. The prison was closed down in 2001. Battle Of Caseros
The Battle of Caseros (; ) was fought near the town of El Palomar, Argentina, on 3 February 1852, between forces of the Argentine Confederation, commanded by Juan Manuel de Rosas, and a coalition consisting of the Argentine provinces of Entre Ríos and Corrientes, the Empire of Brazil, and Uruguay. The allied forces, known as the Grand Army (''Ejército Grande''), defeated Rosas, who fled to the United Kingdom. This defeat marked a sharp division in the history of Argentina. After the battle, Justo José de Urquiza, a ''caudillo'' and governor of Entre Ríos, became the provisional Director of the Argentine Confederation and sponsored the creation of the country's constitution in 1853, later becoming the first constitutional president of Argentina in 1854. Caseros Department
The Caseros Department (in Spanish, ''Departamento Caseros'') is an administrative subdivision (''departamento'') of the province of Santa Fe, Argentina. It is located in the south of the province. Its head town is the city of Casilda (population 32,000). Its neighbouring departments are Belgrano and Iriondo in the north, San Lorenzo in the west, and Constitución and General López in the south; to the west its border marks the interprovincial limit with Córdoba.
