The Casa del Gavilan is a historic bed and breakfast located six miles south of Cimarron, New Mexico. The property is at the base of Urraca Mesa and is surrounded by the property of Philmont Scout Ranch. The bed and breakfast has six guest rooms. The Casa del Gavilan is also referred to as The Nairn Place due to its original owners. History The Casa del Gavilan (House of the Hawk) is an adobe villa built in 1911 for Connecticut natives Jack and Gertrude Nairn, who purchased the land in 1910 from George Webster. In the early 1940s the residence was used briefly as the headquarters of the UU Bar Ranch, then owned by Oklahoma oil magnate Waite Phillips. Today, the Casa del Gavilan is owned by the Gavilan Limited Liability Company, of which several members have ties with the adjacent Philmont Scout Ranch. Cimarron, New Mexico
Cimarron is a village in Colfax County, New Mexico, United States, which sits on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The population was 1,021 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous municipality in Colfax County. Cimarron sits on the Cimarron River, a tributary of the 900 mile-long Canadian River, whose headwaters are at the Eagle Nest Dam, with the main part of town lying along U.S. Route 64. Urraca Mesa is a large mesa located in Colfax County in northern New Mexico, U.S., on the property of Philmont Scout Ranch. It reaches an elevation of . Philmont Scout Ranch
Philmont Scout Ranch is a ranch located in Colfax County, New Mexico, near the village of Cimarron; it covers of wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the east side of the Cimarron Range of the Rocky Mountains. Donated by oil baron Waite Phillips, the ranch is owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America. It is a National High Adventure Base where crews of Scouts and Venturers take part in backpacking treks and other outdoor activities. By land area, it is one of the largest youth camps in the world. During the 2019 season, between June 8 and August 22, an estimated 24,000 Scouts and adult leaders backpacked through the Ranch's extensive backcountry. UU Bar Ranch
The Express UU Bar Ranch, formerly owned by the Oklahoma oil magnate Waite Phillips and now owned by Express Ranches (headquartered in Yukon, Oklahoma), is west of Cimarron, New Mexico, USA, and south of Philmont Scout Ranch. The two ranches are separated by Highway 21. Express Ranches is controlled by Robert A. "Bob" Funk, who is chairman, CEO and founder of Express Employment Professionals. The original UU Bar Ranch land was purchased by Phillips in the 1920s and totaled over 300,000 acres. When Phillips donated his UU Bar Ranch land north of what is now Highway 21 to the Boy Scouts of America in 1941 (approximately 127,000 acres) and retained the grazing land to the south. Waite Phillips
Waite Phillips (January 19, 1883 – January 27, 1964) was an American petroleum businessman who created a fully integrated operation that combined petroleum producing, refining and marketing. With headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he also developed several office complexes and engaged in banking and ranching. Phillips was a philanthropist for both local Tulsa institutions and national causes. In Tulsa he built a 72-room mansion for his residence, which he later donated to the city; it became the Philbrook Museum of Art. He gave of his favorite ranch in New Mexico to the Boy Scouts of America, together with an office building as part of its endowment. The ranch is now Philmont Scout Ranch, one of the largest youth camps in the world.
