Carrying (basketball)
In the game of basketball, carrying is a ball-handling violation. Like other violations, the penalty is that possession of the ball is given to the opposing team. Statistically, this counts as a turnover of the ball. Basketball players can advance the ball by passing it to a teammate, but the ball handler cannot move except while dribbling (bouncing) the ball. Dribbling is subject to several rules that limit the ball handler's advantage. The National Basketball Association Rule No. 10 (Section II (d)) states, "A player who is dribbling may not put any part of his hand under the ball and (1) carry it from one point to another or (2) bring it to a pause and then continue to dribble again." Carrying is also known as palming. Some spectators misunderstand this rule and see examples of carries that are not called. In basketball, a common violation is the most minor class of illegal action. Most violations are committed by the team with possession of the ball, when a player mishandles the ball or makes an illegal move. The typical penalty for a violation is loss of the ball to the other team. This is one type of turnover. Common violations are defined in Rule No. 10 of the NBA Rulebook. In basketball, a turnover occurs when a team loses possession of the ball to the opposing team before a player takes a shot at their team's basket. Volleyball

Traveling (basketball)
In basketball, traveling is a violation of the rules of basketball in which a player takes more than a predefined number of steps while holding the ball. Taking more steps without dribbling than this limit will result in a turnover and possession of the ball for the other team. In the NBA and FIBA, when a player has taken more than two steps without the ball being dribbled, a traveling violation is called. The NCAA and NFHS do not allow two steps. Double Dribble
In basketball, an illegal dribble (colloquially called a double dribble or dribbling violation) occurs when a player ends their dribble by catching or causing the ball to come to rest in one or both hands and then dribbles it again with one hand or when a player touches it before the ball hits the ground. The dribble also ends when the dribbler palms/carries the ball by allowing it to come to rest in one or both hands. This is a palming/carrying the ball violation if the player continues with another dribble. There is no violation during the jump ball, a throw-in or a free throw.
