Carrizozo Municipal School District is a school district headquartered in Carrizozo, New Mexico. It operates three schools: Carrizozo Elementary School, Carrizozo Middle School, and Carrizozo High School. Within Lincoln County, New Mexico, Lincoln County, the district includes Carrizozo and Nogal, New Mexico, Nogal. The district also includes a portion of Socorro County, New Mexico, Socorro County. History Robert Cobos began his term as superintendent circa 2006. In 2011 he resigned from his position. The board of trustees selected Jim Nesbitt to replace Cobos. In 2017, the state gave Carrizozo High School an "A" rating. Carrizozo, New Mexico
Carrizozo is a town in Lincoln County, New Mexico, United States. It is the county seat, with a population of 996 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1899, the town provided the main railroad access for Lincoln County, and the town experienced significant population growth in the early decades of the 1900s. However, with declining relevance of the railroad, the population of the town has gradually declined. The town is located at the intersection of U.S. Routes 54 and 380. Name The name of the town is derived from the Spanish vernacular for reed grass ('' Carrizo''), which grew significantly in the area and provided excellent feed for ranch cattle. The additional "zo" at the end of the town name was added to indicate abundance of Carrizo grass. The town is now often referred to colloquially as "Zozo". Lincoln County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,269. Its county seat is Carrizozo, while its largest community is Ruidoso. History Prior to the creation of Lincoln County, the Mescalero Apache occupied this region. They were confined to a reservation near Fort Stanton in 1873 and to their present reservation, only partly in Lincoln County, in 1883. Much of the commerce of late-19th century Lincoln County consisted of government contracts to provide food and other commodities to the Mescalero and to the soldiers at Fort Stanton. Hispanics from northern New Mexico began moving into the region in the 1850s. Lincoln County was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. Socorro County () is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 16,595. The county seat is Socorro. The county was formed in 1852 as one of the original nine counties of New Mexico Territory. Socorro was originally the name given to a Native American village (''see'': Puebloan peoples) by Don Juan de Oñate in 1598. Having received vitally needed food and assistance from the native population, Oñate named the pueblo ''Socorro'' ("succor" in English). The ''Albuquerque Journal'' is the largest newspaper in the U.S. state of New Mexico. History The ''Golden Gate'' newspaper was founded in June 1880. In the fall of 1880, the owner of the ''Golden Gate'' died and Journal Publishing Company was created. Journal Publishing changed the paper's name to ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' and issued its first edition of the ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' on October 14, 1880. The ''Daily Journal'' was first published in Old Town Albuquerque, but in 1882 the publication moved to a single room in the so-called new town (or expanded Albuquerque) at Second and Silver streets near the railroad tracks.
