Carrickmines
Carrickmines () is an outer suburb of Dublin in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland. The area, still semi-rural, was historically on the border of English control and featured a defensive construction, Carrickmines Castle, which became the subject of national controversy during the building of a late stage of Dublin's M50 orbital motorway. Character Previously a rural area, and today a semi-rural suburban region, Carrickmines is now divided northeast–southwest by the M50 motorway, with, to the northeast, more established residential areas, and to the southwest, including along Glenamuck Road, new retail parks, office buildings, housing schemes and apartments. Geography Carrickmines developed as a settlement in the more than 6 km long valley of the same name, which contains the modest Carrickmines River and its tributaries. Carrickmines Fire
On Saturday, 10 October 2015, a blaze swept through a halting site at Carrickmines in County Dublin, Ireland. It proved fatal. This was the country's deadliest such disaster since the Stardust fire. The fire led to a debate about the squalid conditions in which many members of the Irish Traveller, Irish travelling community live. Taoiseach Enda Kenny visited the scene and announced that flags would be flown at half-mast. Books of condolence were opened throughout the country. President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina Higgins passed people of all ages queuing outside the Mansion House, Dublin, Mansion House to sign a book there. Those who died were also honoured at vigils throughout the country. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul set up an emergency fund for the families of those affected. Carrickmines Luas Stop
Carrickmines ( ga, Carraig Mhaighin) is a stop on the Luas light rail tram system in Dún Laoghaire - Rathdown, south of Dublin, Ireland which serves the nearby village of Carrickmines. It opened in 2010 and was built on the site of a disused heavy rail station of the same name. History Railway station (1854-1958) The Harcourt Street railway line was built by the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway and opened in 1854, running from a temporary terminus at Harcourt Road near the city centre to Bray. Carrickmines was originally one of four intermediate stops on the line. The station was located to the east of Glenamuck Road North, which crossed the railway line on an iron bridge. The up platform (for trains towards Dublin) featured a small station building whose design was similar to those of other DWWR buildings, attributed to the line's engineer William Dargan. Carrickmines Castle
Carrickmines Castle is an archaeological site in Carrickmines, County Dublin, in eastern Ireland. The castle was built in the Middle Ages to protect the English-ruled Pale around Dublin. The mostly subsurface ruins lay in the path of the M50 Motorway, completed in 2005. Sections of the medieval walls and some sections of the castle's defensive structures were preserved within or under M50 roundabouts. Green Line (Luas)
The Green Line () is one of the two lines of Dublin's Luas light rail system. The Green Line was formerly entirely in the south side of Dublin city. It mostly follows the route of the old Harcourt Street railway line, which was reserved for possible re-use when it closed in 1958. The Green Line allows for passenger transfers at O’ Connell GPO and Marlborough to Luas Red Line services and also allows commuters to use Broombridge as an interchange station to reach outer suburbs such as Castleknock and Ongar. Vincent Salafia is an Irish lawyer and environmentalist. Salafia was involved in a legal challenge against Dick Roche, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government over the M3 Motorway at Tara in 2006. Cabinteely () is a suburb of Dublin's southside. It is in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, County Dublin, Ireland. Geography Cabinteely lies around the crossroads of Johnstown Road / Brennanstown Road and the Old Bray Road, and on either side of the ''Stillorgan Dual Carriageway'' ( N11), which is parallel to the Old Bray Road. Foxrock () is an affluent suburb of Dublin, Ireland. It is within the county of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, in the postal district of Dublin 18 and in the Roman Catholic parish of Foxrock. Ballyogan () is a residential area in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland, located approximately 12 km south of Dublin city centre. The Pale ( Irish: ''An Pháil'') or the English Pale (' or ') was the part of Ireland directly under the control of the English government in the Late Middle Ages. It had been reduced by the late 15th century to an area along the east coast stretching from Dalkey, south of Dublin, to the garrison town of Dundalk. The inland boundary went to Naas and Leixlip around the Earldom of Kildare, towards Trim and north towards Kells.
