Carrick F.C.
Carrick Football Club was a 19th-century football club originally from the Partick area of Glasgow in Scotland, but which moved to Possilpark for a brief period. History The club was founded in August 1874 playing in Maryhill. For most of its existence the club played low-level football. In 1884, Possilpark F.C. dissolved, and its ground at Saracen Park was put up for rent. Carrick took on the ground from the start of the 1885–86 season and joined the Scottish Football Association, entitling it to enter the Scottish Cup, which it did for the first time in 1886–87. Initially the move looked promising, as, in one of its first senior matches, Carrick beat Kirkintilloch Athletic 5–0, and later beat Wishaw Swifts; although the club lost at Lindertis of Forfarshire, it was at least well-regarded enough to be able to play friendlies distance from Glasgow. Saracen Park or Ashfield Stadium, also known as Peugeot Ashfield Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a stadium in Glasgow, Scotland. It is currently home to Glasgow Tigers for speedway. It has also previously been a venue for greyhound racing and for Ashfield F.C. for football. The ground was originally opened for football in 1937. History Ashfield F.C. opened Saracen Park for junior football in 1937, and played at the ground until 2022. Located in the Possilpark area of Glasgow, it was named after the adjacent Saracen Foundry. Speedway The first speedway team to race at Ashfield Stadium – as it is known for racing purposes – were the Ashfield Giants between 1949 and 1953. Saracen Foundry, Possilpark, Glasgow The Saracen Foundry was the better-known name for the Possilpark, Glasgow-based foundry company W MacFarlane & Co. Ltd, founded and owned by Walter MacFarlane. MacFarlane's was the most important manufacturer of ornamental ironwork in Scotland. Walter Macfarlane Walter Macfarlane was born in Torrance of Campsie, near Glasgow, in 1817. He worked for the jeweller William Russell, before serving an apprenticeship with blacksmith James Buchanan. He then spent a decade working for Moses, McCulloch & Co's Cumberland Foundry in Stockwell Street. With his own main home at 22 Park Circus, Glasgow, Macfarlane became a prominent figure in local politics, becoming the President of the Glasgow Liberal Association and a City Councillor. Kelvinside is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde and is bounded by Broomhill, Dowanhill and Hyndland to the south with Kelvindale and the River Kelvin to the north.
