Carolyn Brown (choreographer)
Carolyn Brown (born September 26, 1927) is an American dancer, choreographer, and writer. She is best known for her work as a founding member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Biography Coming from a dancing family in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Carolyn (Rice) Brown studied with her mother, Marion Rice in Fitchburg. Brown was a product of the Denishawn School and graduated in philosophy from Wheaton College in 1950. After attending a masterclass with Cunningham in Denver in 1951, she decided to pursue dance full-time and moved to New York to continue her studies at the Juilliard School. She also studied with Cunningham and became one of the founding members of his company, which was born at Black Mountain College in North Carolina in the summer of 1953. She was the most important female dancer in Cunningham's company for the next twenty years and danced in 40 of his works, often collaborating with Cunningham and John Cage in the creative process. Carolyn Brown is a former BBC Radio 4 newsreader and continuity announcer. Brown started her career as a reporter at a local newspaper, ''The Crewe Chronicle'', and joined Radio City, an independent local radio station in Liverpool, England, in 1981. After two years, she moved to BBC Radio Leeds where she presented the morning news programme, ''Good Morning, Yorkshire''. After spells in regional television in Plymouth and Bristol, she joined BBC Radio 4 in 1991 as a continuity announcer and later read the Shipping Forecast. Tener Brown (or Carolyn Tener Brown, born 1960) is an American ballet coach of New Jersey Ballet. She is a former ballet dancer of American Ballet Theatre and actress. Personal life and career Brown, from Upper Montclair, New Jersey, started her dance career by training with New Jersey School of Ballet at the age of 7. In 1971, when George Tomal and Joseph Carow choreographed the first New Jersey Ballet's ''Nutcracker'', they added fouettés and challenging pointework for Clara to match Brown's skills.
