Caroline Billin Currie (known professionally as C. B. Currie or Miss Currie, 1849–1940) was an English miniature-painter and fore-edge painter best known for her work on Cosway bindings. Life and career She was born Caroline Billin Curry, the youngest of twelve children, in Helston, Cornwall, in 1849. By 1901, she was working for John Harrison Stonehouse in London at the Henry Sotheran & Co. bookshop. Listed as a 'copyist', she did not attach her name to her work until 1911 when the popularity of her paintings made her the first individual named in the Sotheran catalogue as an artist. She painted ivory miniatures for the Cosway bindings produced by the bookbinder Rivière, later progressing onto fore-edges. Art Currie's fore-edge paintings often reproduced photographs or other works of art, sometimes unrelated to the content of their books. A fore-edge painting is an image painted on the unbound edges of a book visible when the pages of the book are fanned. It also can refer to an image that is visible on the closed edge of a book. References also refer to the paintings as disappearing or secret images, and they are often hidden beneath gilded edges. Historically, fore-edge painting has had three purposes: identification, indication of ownership, or artistry. Possibly originating in the 10th century, the earliest known examples feature titles written on the closed edges of a book, symbolic imagery, or heraldic designs. The exact origins are debated among scholars. The technique of the hidden painting gained notable popularity in England during the 17th and 18th centuries. John Harrison Stonehouse
John Harrison Stonehouse (1864 – 27 August 1937) was an English bookseller and Charles Dickens scholar at long-established London booksellers Sotheran's where he rose from apprentice to managing director through hard work and a strong entrepreneurial instinct. He introduced and popularised the "Cosway" binding and commissioned the opulent edition of Edward FitzGerald's ''The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam'' that was lost when Sinking of the Titanic, RMS ''Titanic'' sank in 1912. He published a book on the subject in 1933. He became a specialist in manuscripts and acquired a previously unknown collection of Dickens material relating to a youthful romance between the author and Maria Beadnell, his notes on which were turned into a book published in the United States.
