Carol Araullo
Carol Castillo Pagaduan Araullo (born December 15, 1953) is a Filipino activist and was formerly the Chairperson of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (''New Patriotic Alliance''). College education and early activism Araullo went into University of the Philippines Diliman as a psychology major. Active in extra-curriculars, she was elected councilor in the College of Arts and Sciences, and later as vice-chairperson of the University Student Council. She also joined the UP Student Catholic Action. During the Diliman Commune, she was studying for exam when she was called by a fellow student by realizing unto her that while the students are outside protesting, she is still studying. She participated in the said mass action but was initially critical of the violence coming from both the police and the protesters. Bagong Alyansang Makabayan
The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan () or Bayan is an alliance of left-wing Philippine organizations. It was founded on International Workers' Day, May 1, 1985 as part of the opposition during the Marcos dictatorship. The University Student Council of the University of the Philippines Diliman (Filipino: Ang Konseho ng Mag-aaral ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman) is the official student representative body of the Philippines' premiere institution of higher learning. Diliman Commune
The Diliman Commune was an uprising led by the students, faculty members, and residents of the University of the Philippines Diliman, together with transport workers, on February 1–9, 1971, in protest of the three centavo increase in oil prices midway through the second term of the Marcos administration—about a year after the events of the First Quarter Storm and about a year before Marcos' eventual declaration of Martial Law. It also refers to an intentional community established by the protesters patterned after the Paris Commune of 1871. Like the supporters of Paris Commune, the protesters referred to themselves as Communards. They renamed the University of the Philippines Diliman campus to "Malayang Komunidad ng UP Diliman" ("Free Commune of UP Diliman"). The University of the Philippines Manila College of Medicine (CM) is the medical school of the University of the Philippines Manila, the oldest constituent university of the University of the Philippines System.
