Carnival Records was the name given to at least two record labels. Carnival Records (1961–1962) In 1961, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss started a short-lived label that was the precursor to A&M Records. They released two singles. "Tell It to the Birds"/"Fallout Shelter" by Dore Alpert was distributed by Dot Records outside California. Carnival Records (1962–1983) Jazz saxophonist Joe Evans (musician), Joe Evans set up Carnival Records label in the early 1960s and based it in New York and relocated in Newark, New Jersey, in 1963. Releasing 63 singles and two albums, the label focus was rhythm and blues and soul music. Joe Evans ran the label with a small staff that included his wife. Herb Alpert
Herb Alpert (born March 31, 1935) is an American trumpeter, pianist, singer, songwriter, record producer, arranger, conductor, painter, sculptor and theatre producer, who led the band Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (sometimes called "Herb Alpert and the TJB") in the 1960s. During the same decade, he co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss. Alpert has recorded 28 albums that have appeared on the U.S. Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200 chart, five of which reached No. 1; he has been awarded 14 Music recording sales certification, platinum albums and 15 Music recording sales certification, gold albums. Jerry Moss
Jerome Sheldon Moss (May 8, 1935 – August 16, 2023) was an American recording executive, best known for being the co-founder of A&M Records, along with trumpet player and bandleader Herb Alpert. Music career Early stages (1958–60) After graduating from Brooklyn College with a degree in English and serving in the United States Army, Moss began his music career by promoting " 16 Candles", a 1958 hit for the Crests on Coed Records. A&M Records (1960–99) In 1960, he moved to California, where he teamed up with Herb Alpert, forming Carnival Records in 1962 and running the company from an office in Alpert's garage. Discovering that the name was already taken, they dubbed their newly founded company A&M Records. Moss and Alpert agreed in 1989 to sell A&M to PolyGram for a reported $500 million. Dot Records
Dot Records was an American record label founded by Randy Wood (record producer), Randy Wood and Gene Nobles that was active between 1950 and 1978. The original headquarters of Dot Records were in Gallatin, Tennessee. In its early years, Dot specialized in artists from Tennessee. Then it branched out to include musicians from across the U.S. It recorded country music, rhythm and blues, polkas, waltzes, Gospel music, gospel, rockabilly, pop music, pop, and early rock and roll. After moving to Hollywood in 1956, Dot Records bought many recordings by small local independent labels and issued them nationally. Joe Evans (musician)
Joe Evans (October 7, 1916 – January 17, 2014) was an American jazz alto saxophonist. Early life and education Evans was born in Bonifay and grew up in Pensacola, Florida. Evans dropped out of high school and moved to New York City to pursue his music career. He later earned a GED and associate degree from Essex County College in 1973. Through a Ford Family Foundation scholarship, he earned a Master of Education degree from Rutgers University in 1975. Career Evans was active between 1939 and 1965, playing in the big bands of Jay McShann, Jimmy Forrest and Gene Ramey; Don Redman and Louis Armstrong. In 1944 he recorded with Mary Lou Williams, as a member of a band including Coleman Hawkins, Bill Coleman and Denzil Best. At the beginning of 1945, he recorded for J. The Manhattans
The Manhattans are an American R&B vocal group. Their songs " Kiss and Say Goodbye", recorded in 1976, and 1980's " Shining Star", both sold millions of copies. The Manhattans have recorded 45 hits on the ''Billboard'' R&B Chart, including twelve top-10 R&B hits in the United States, starting in 1965. Sixteen of their songs have reached the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, including two top 10s and a number-one hit with their song "Kiss and Say Goodbye".
